You can argue until youre blue in the face about inefficiency, but when Unreal Engine 3 hits and is proclaimed "the best engine of all time" by the unreal fanbois, lets see how it performs on 6800s and X800s. Its not sloppy code, its progress.

Regarding Fear; Yes, it is a brutal game, which allows details in textures shadows etc. almost in the absurd. It is a leap forward in the evolution of game engines. The question is, does the maximum detail shadows and effects really make that much of a difference to the game play? you be the judge of that yourself.

Regarding game engine and graphics evolution; I am not saying there is no progress, but rather, at what point is the progress not enough to justify the increased requirements of the hardware? Beyond Unreal 3 I do not think there is much advancement to be made in the area of graphics, not to the same degree, and not to justify twice, thrice, or four times the computational power to increase details of shadows. Progress will instead have to be in the area of physics and AI, two areas still yet underdeveloped in game engines.

Run it in Direct X 7 mode and everything will be smooth... The graphics isn't the gameplay... take this in account

*irony on* Yeah, I really bought a $360 Card to run CoD worse than my previous graphics card *irony off*

Most of the time it runs at 40FPS. However during heavy rain combined with smoke, combined with many enemy soldiers, and many lighting effects during the last part of the game, it really drops low. "The Tiger" is the mission I am on now, and it is a killer on performance.

If I wanted to run the game in DX7 Mode, I would have kept my old card. It had been many times more than enough to run CoD2 in DX7 mode.

I really hope that there will be a patch that fixes something with CoD2, since it is insane in it's requirements at the moment. Only way to stay at constant 60FPS is to drop to 640x480 in resolution, and that feels like a trip back to 1995/1996. Not something I want to do.

If it is correct (reading some rumors regarding the xbox 360 version), then the Xbox360 version renders the graphics internally at 640x480 and uses the HDTV output chip to scale the graphics to desired resolution. I belive that the programmers had this procedure in mind when they made the game, and did not much care about optimization. What is important now is to have your game as a launch title for Xbox 360, because that is where it will make any kind of serious money.

CraigRT: So am I, after reinstall. It is only CoD2 that is somewhat messy still. Fear runs acceptable now (it runs it as it should that means). All other games is just running amazingly smooth and fast on this card. I am very happy having switched from my x800XL that I was quite displeased with due to regular "VPU recovery" errors in several of the games I play.

Latest nVidia Forceware fixed the performance somewhat in CoD2, but it still feels like CoD2 needs a lot of work.

To summarize all; Reasonably happy with card since reinstall, not so happy with CoD2.

........

Well you can't expect Nvidia or ATI to consistently deliver 60fps just for your gaming pleasure. Do you know how hard they have to slog to squeeze out that level of performance from a measly 16 pipes.Why don't you get an SLI setup before complaining about performance.

*sarcasm off*

Orangat: First of all, sorry for being a bit angry. I will try to keep my answer short and not offend anyone. Simple answer; I wont, unless someone decides I should get a ludicrous wage increase. I wont say more about that. So let us instead discuss CoD2 issues.

I do not expect them to constantly deliver 60 FPS. I see now that I explained things poorly above, and that what I meant to be an example of getting the feeling of a real performance boost during an upgrade was interpreted as my requirements for FPS. What I meant is that I expect to at least not have to run into 10 FPS game play with a new card. And since my Fear issue was resolved, I tend to blame CoD2 rather than the card itself.
I blame those who programmed CoD2, because I am pretty sure it could have been better optimized. Does not the fact that just turning on "Optimize for SLI" give you a 5 FPS boost on a single card (or any boost on any card) suggest that there is something really wrong with this game?

I know that discussing it here does not solve anything, but still, there must be a solution that does not involve turning of all the stuff which was part of the reason why I got a new graphics card for. In fact, the CoD2 Demo ran rather ok on my old card, and it ran totally excellent on this 7800GT. But the final version of the game do not run as well as the demo, even with the same settings. So...

It seems it is no big secret that CoD2 is a rather buggy piece of software, since there have cropped up many threads and guides on the net how to tweak it, and how to deal with the performance inhibiting bugs. Here is one thread for an example; http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=59144&page=5

UPDATE: Oh, forgot. Before anyone missunderstands me again. I do not have a constant frame rate of 10 FPS. I have an average frame rate of 33-62 FPS, with 10 FPS game play occuring on some places in the game. There is a definite high variation in frame rate in CoD 2.

For those that are running CoD2 on a single card, try this;

Add or change the following in your config file (it wont reduce quality, but improve performance);

seta r_gpuSync "off"
seta r_multiGpu "1"

Then in the game, set rendermode to Auto instead of manually setting it to DX9 or DX7. It selects DX9 for the 7800GTs, and for some reason you get a higher frame rate if you allow the game to select this by itself.

I now have an average framerate of 50-72 FPS, dropping as low as 33 FPS in heavy combat. Will have to play more to see if the really low dropping frame problem occurs again.

http://www.tweakguides.com/COD2_9.html <- This is a good tweakguide if you want to get some more performance out from your card in CoD2.

I hope these issues will be resolved with patches. Because, I can't belive that developers would be so unintelligent to require hardware that does not yet exist for the game to be playable.

Makes me wonder if I at all will be able to play Ohblivion when it is released.

I Remember Deus Ex requiering what most people dident have at the time. But to this day i remember that game for its sheer briliance, not its graphics.

I'm not angry at all. In fact I agree completely if you read through my posts.

I think it's the drivers you did unistall the drivers and than install the card and reinstall the drivers right? using a program like driver cleaner or w/e its called.

Always does this. It did not help. So clean install.

But as I have written. It is only CoD2 that does not run well still. And I might have solved that as well. I just have to play it some more to verify this.
