Both Price and Performance wise I think the Fight between the 79GTX and X19XT is a much more interesting fight, and I would putthe X19XT as the better card in both performance, price and value even even if just barely.
Uh, what makes you think that the X1800XT has more "real world limitations" when comparing the 7900 non-voltmoded. Just by getting any (or in this case, the cheapest since all are the same build) X1800XT he can overclock through the software just like one could overclock the 7900 through a voltmod. That will give it
less limitations when comparing it the stock or factory oc'd versions of a 7900GT since the 7900GT will reach a voltage bottleneck. Besides, he already got the X1800XT, but I can see how you would like to voice your opinion if you disagreed with it.
Don't get me wrong, the 7900GT is a good card, especially since I would volt mod one (did it with my 7800's for SLI and loved it). But the X1800XT does compete evenly with the 7900GT in most benchmarks that are both credible and thorough. It's not a very good argument to say that benches are stupid and that none of them show what "real world" gameplay is like. And when the factory oc'd versions of the 7900GT come into play, they still are not at the factory, non-overclocked version of the X1800XT speeds as far as core GPU frequencies go. The memory clock on the 7900GT is higher than the X1800XT, but offers half of the amount. And even if that 2x multiplier of available memory is unimportant to you, the X1800XT's memory communcation is a little more efficient considering its ring-bus architecture.
