If you think it may be heat problems, I'd suggest running a program that can monitor/log your temps while gaming. I know you can leave a graph of temps open with Rivatuner, but I don't know if it will support your card.

To me it sounds more like a PSU problem or the BIOS/7950GX2 not playing nice problem.

Well, This is the Microsoft dualcore hotfix. It's designed to fix a problem where both CPU cores would enter powersaving mode even if only one is idle. As for your temps, yes, that definitely seems much too hot for a 7950 when it's not actively running 3D. I'd suggest removing the side panel of the case and aiming a large room fan at it so that it's blowing directly on the cards. If this fixes your issues then you're definitely having temperature problems.

You still having trouble with that 7950GX2?
First I don't think it's a problem with temp's or drivers.
Try this (for the hell of it):
-Right click on desktop
-Click properties
-Go to setttings tab
-hit advanced
-go to troubleshoot tab
-Uncheck "enable write combining"

And see if that helps at all.

Well, I did some more temp. readings and got the card up to 92 degrees C during CS:S and it idles around 63 degrees.

I haven't gotten that massive artifacting lately, but the moderate artifacting is almost always present now. I ran Oblivion, and the performance didn't seem all that great.

On my 20 inch monitor I got a about 20-25 fps average indoors, about 35 max, and 5 minimum. This is with 4XAA and 16XAF. I haven't tried it outdoors yet, but from what I gather this seems like outdoor performance, which it usually much worse.

In HL2: EP1 the framerate was about 40 average, but dipped into the teens sometimes.

On CS_Compound, I got around 70fps average, but again it dipped into the 20's and 30's occasionally, and this is with no HDR. People said they were consistantly getting 100+ on this map, no matter what the settings, except 16XAA.

I am wondering whether the position of the tower is causing problems. I have it sitting on a pedastal that is holding up the desk. It is open in the front, closed in the back, and partially open on the sides. Do you think this is less than ideal, or would it not make much of a difference?

I will try that suggestion wizboy, but what exactly does 'write combining' do?

No idea what it did but it helped someone with a X1900XTX speed it up to the way it should be so why the hell not try it on yours. (there's no harm in it and you can just re-enable it if it doesn't work.

I'm very sorry to report that 2 days ago I got also a P5B Deluxe non Wifi and I had exaclty the same issue as described by the OP.

My 3DMark2005 results were 15759 on the DQ6 (as posted above)

Now with the P5B it is 3243 !!!

Sometimes after a restart I can run it properly, but I can never predict if it will work.

After 2 days on it, I'm returning the mobo.

OP, return your mobo if you can or sell it on ebay and get another brand or chipset.

I'm so confused! I have to return the card today to Newegg if I want a refund or replacement. And lately people have been saying that the DX10 cards won't be out within three months, so the step-up program won't do me anything.

The framerate in my games continues to lag even more frequently, going into the 30-50 fps range in CS:S more often than not.

On on a side, though possibly related note, why would my computer be saying that C drive is running very low on space and that system stability may be compromised?

Thanks. Please help me make my desicion today.

A virus? I highly doubt it. I've hardly gone on the 'net at all.

What video card did you suggest I get if there isn't anything more you can do?

Yippy, another problem!

Now my sound isn't working. All in-game sounds and internet video sounds will not work unless I have MSI's Power Cinema running in the backround and sound is playing. I only got the in-game sound to work when I had a CD running on that program at at least 10 percent volume. The in-game sounds were very soft, but audible.

The only change I had made was installing a sound-enhancement demo from MusicMatch Jukebox. Why would this happen?

Also, the extreme artifacting has started again.

Read my post, I did that to help you. With the P5B and the 7950GX2, it is luck of the draw. There are experience people around here with the same problem and they cannot find the reason (at least not yet).

Keep the 7950GX2, get another mobo, from Gigabyte - DS3 if you like to keep cheap. It's much cheaper than the video card and it's the source of your problems.

Return the mobo or sell it on Ebay. That's my final advice and it's a good one.

OK, the computer store checked out the computer and they said it was fine. However, I am still having a few performance issues.

On the CS Source stress test I am getting about 100fps average at 1680*1020 4XAA 16AF. I saw reports of people with a lesser processor and two 7800GTX's getting over 140fps at these settings, and I thought a 7950GX2 was supposed to be better than two 7900GT's or 7800GTX's.

And also, while playing the game, my framerate on Dust is usually around 50-60, but dipps into the 20's every few minutes or so and stays there until in goes back up to about 50. Remember this is with HDR though.

When I play with the bots, the whole game is very, very jittery. The fps reader (FRAPS) says it is like 60, but it feels like 15 at best.

Overall, the GPU performance is a fair bit lower than my X1900XT, which is not normal. But, the thing that confuses me the most it that the 3D Mark 06 score is normal.

Some of the same issues I reported earlier are still present. The CPU performance seems pretty slow. It gets noticably sluggish when multiple windows are open, and I was expecting butter smooth. Games also freeze up fairly often.

I am almost certain the issues on the display are the monitor's doing, but why does it only show up when I click certain things, and goes away when and click the mouse only to come back again? How does the monitor know what I am doing. It does not seem related to colors either.

So, guys will you please help me? The new system isn't the leap I was expecting from my old rig. Thanks in advance.

you know. i'm still reading the rest of the thread but this post makes me thi9nhk FAULTY RAM

Cool, so my Power Supply, Video Card, Motherboard, RAM, and possibly Sound Card are all faulty/noncompatible. That's nice. Dell is looking pretty good right about now.

I'm not sure why I'm posting this as it's been said before in this thread more than two other times....

Replace the motherboard with a different one.

/thread

This was one of the most frustrating reads ever I think. 2 other people with the same motherboard have the same problem as you...untill they replaced it. Now they have no problems and you are still coming back to this thread hoping for some "new" answer...

From Gary Key AT Editor:

We figured out the issue and why one board works perfectly and the next one will not. It is due to a weird combination of previous NV driver sets and two different bios versions from NV on the 7950GX2 cards. We have found that unless you completely uninstall the driver set (using DriverCleaner) the board will sometimes miss installing the pci-e bridge required for XP to recognized the second GPU. I will explain this further in our 965 roundup but even switching 7950GX2 cards with a different bios will cause the same issue. We have been able to recreate this on boards from Abit, Asus, and Gigabyte in the P965 series and the 975X boards from Abit, Asus, and DFI. We are working with NV at this time along with the board suppliers as even a simple bios update on the board can create the same issue. The solution at this point is to uninstall the drivers completely, reboot into safe mode, use DriverCleaner, reboot, enter XP, reboot again, and then install the 91.47 drivers. Should work consistently but I am now testing each official bios release to see what happens on bios updates.

With Newegg's 30 day return policy, what must you have done by 30 days:

A. Must have an RMA request sent it in by then.

B. Must have sent product.

C. They recieved and approved product within 30 days.

Thanks.

Silverturtle,

Regarding your 12 volt power plug on you mobo...it's a 4 or 8 pin. Did you use a 4 pin or 8 pin connection to you mobo?
