7970 x2 Crossfire Microstutter unbrearable

Crysis 2 maxed out on 470 surround with 35 fps avg. I don't see it when I'm playing, and I didn't see anything in the video... Though I guess ignorance, well it's bliss

Then you should not be running SLI/CF to begin with.

why? If I want maximum quality, there is no way around it. True, in some cases fps go to waste with this method, but that is still better than stuttery gameplay with only one card.

I have finally finished building out the remainder of the watercooling and machine has just got all its drivers installed. I have done a music test and chrome movement test and both passed this time with flying colours. The only thing I have changed to the previous installation is I used the Jan 21st Drivers instead of the Pre WHQL drivers.

I am quite certain now those drivers cause severe input lag and stuttering. What is weird is that the sound card has stopped stuttering as well which means it was the graphics drivers causing the problem.

Glad you got it fixed, always a bummer when hardware isn't working the way it should.

tom has revisited this (~6 week ago) and looks like the latest drivers (12.11) is full of microstutter. as the article concluded. amd is obviously giving up finesse for max fps. this is good new for the single gpu folks. as for us multi gpu folks. we need to stick with what has worked.



so which driver version is the jan 21st driver?

closest match is 12.1 with jan 25th.

The 25th January was certainly the driver I used. But it was far from stable in general. It also still had microstutter in a number of games, it just wasn't borking the entire machine.

I never found a driver that fixed the problems and eventually moved to a pair of 680's. I still have the 7970's, had a play with them when 12.11 came out and determined the problems I had were still there. I found a lot more problems besides the one in this thread.

Necrothread.....there are more modern discussions on this now in VC&G where the state of knowledge has moved on considerably from this early thread related to other issues I was having with the cards and early drivers.

Left side - not butter-smooth, but playable all right. Particularly if mouse movement remains smooth, and if it's vsync-ed (looks like it is).
Is this with Radeon Pro\s Dynamic Vsync? Maybe try lower value...

Right side - so much for the theory that 80+fps is enough to eliminate micro-stuttering. Horrible :thumbsdown:
