They are releasing pressure because the reactor is about to blow up, ya, that would attract my attention. I heard the pressure inside is already 1.5 time the designed limit.

MSNBC is stating that the evacuation area has been expanded due to radiation surging outside of the plant. No story yet though, just their "breaking news" banner. They might have some serious issues at that plant.

There are no serious issues yet. The United States has enough time to gather and prep coolant for shipping, load it onto a plane, and fly 20 hours or something over there to help replenish their coolant stock.

The 1.8 mile radius evacuation is to prevent complications with the gas they're going to release to help keep the temperature down.

It's 1.5 times the normal rate, not 1.5 times the maximum rating the facilities can handle.

Hype, people. Don't be dumbasses.

Right, because the words of some freakin off the deep end loonie on the internet is more intelligent and more efficient than the NOAA experts constantly monitoring the crust of the earth every single second of every day.

Apparently so because they didn't say jack shit did they.

Oh, I don't know much about nuclear plants, I was just going off what some nuclear engineer stated in the article.

"It looks very serious. Obviously we do not know exactly what is going on but evacuating people is normally only a matter of last resort when there is only one containment layer left to be breached," said John Large, a member of the British Nuclear Engineering Society and a fellow of the Royal Society.

But they did mention later in the article that reactors look to be shut down now.

These systems appear to have successfully shut down the affected reactors. Modern western reactors, including those planned for the UK, are already designed to withstand significant seismic events.

Could have won 200 million dollars...
Could have avoided government tracking by avoiding balsamic vinegar...
Could have saved thousands of Japanese lives....

Just a few of the many near-misses in Dave's life.

Apparently so because they didn't say jack shit did they.

They had a 7.9 a week earlier. Every time something like that happens, talk starts about a "bigger one" so they were already on high alert without your input. So, you're saying that they "didn't say shit" just because you weren't there listening?

You know, in the face of hundreds dead, hundreds missing, and a death toll likely to enter into the thousands, your "I told you so" attitude on the whole thing when you didn't even predict a Japanese earthquake or tsunami is really just distasteful.

Besides, this isn't the first quake they've had this week. By the time you posted, NOAA had already monitored the first disturbing quake and were completely anticipating a larger quake following soon.

Stop posting.

No facts about the issue support the level of hype that so many are hysterically jumping to.

Being prudent in evacuation and stock piling coolant does NOT mean that a problem actually exists.

From the article I linked:
"The agency said early Saturday that some radiation has also seeped outside the plant, prompting calls for further evacuations of the area. Some 3,000 people have already been urged to leave their homes."

Just got back from the beach across from my condo... The water is still surging in and out about 200'.

I'll post pics in a little bit. All the rocks and coral were completely exposed. Now the beach is covered in water. It's done this a few times now.

Yeah sadly people hear nuclear <insert anything> and their brain just shuts off. I'm 100% dead set against nuclear proliferation and I even think the nuke that was droped on Japan shouldn't have been. But even I think that nuclear power is not only safe but it's highly underrated as a solution to our global power issues.

The media frenzy over this is sickening. It's pure hyperbole and scare tactics. 1000 times normal level is still harmless unless you're bathing in it for days.

Yeah, I mean, 1000x than normal is harmless--unless it's coming from your MICROWAVE!

Wow even now? Isn't this many many hours after the tsunami should have passed Hawaii? Sound like it looked dramatic even if non destructive.

I guess he should have listened to the warnings

[5:15 p.m. ET, 7:15 a.m. Tokyo] A 25-year-old man who was washed out to sea while trying to photograph the tsunami in northern California was confirmed dead Friday, according to Del Norte, California, authorities.

I didn't see any mention of what "normal" is.
1000x the level of "really insanely low" might then be "only slightly insanely low."

Wow indeed. I know they are built to sway in the wind and during earthquakes but to see it like that is just something else!
It's impressive too to see how much we've learned about stuff like that. If you try to make the building entirely rigid, it's going to be more brittle, so that when it finally does fail, it's going to be sudden and total. If it can sway and move, that motion goes into stretching the material, which can then spring back to its original shape; the energy is simply dissipated as heat.
A similarly weird video I saw showed a long corridor on a large tanker ship in rough seas. The whole thing deformed and twisted in nearly all directions.

Yeah I'm guessing they mean the normal background level. To get all worked up about levels 1000 time background level is nothing but fear mongering. Almost criminally bad fear mongering during an incident like this.

A tsunami just like a earthquake, it isn't a one time deal, new surges keep hitting long after the big one.

I would not have thought that it would be THAT spread out though (hours later). Could be wrong. The initial earthquake that caused the seafloor uplift that resulted in the tsunami lasted about 2 mins. None of the aftershocks produced a tsunami as far as I know.

I'm heading to the beach tonight to see what's up. Probably drink a 40 and smoke a blunt.

Yeah... first wave hit around 3:30am. The big surges came about three hours later. Now it's been about 11 hours or so since the start and the water is still moving. They've opened up the coastal roads but they haven't given an all-clear yet.

There was a little damage in Kahului near the harbor where a wave washed in about a half mile up to the post office. Here where I live the water came over the beach, then over the road but stopped short of my condo building. Damage seems fairly minimal but you never know if one of these cycles is going to get big.
