Hopefully, yes. The Japanese have done a wonderful job of anticipating this kind of scenario to the best of their ability!

They are the most prepared country in the world for earthquakes and tsunami's. The only country to have a national tsunami warning system and their earthquake preparedness is second to none. Unfortunately, they weren't prepared for a 8.9 earthquake.

I read how the US was trying to develop a tsunami warning system but it's budget was cut.

The U.S. operates the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, or something like that, that is based in Hawaii and Alaska. Heard something about it earlier today on one of the news channels. I think what they said was that the system itself was an "International Effort" but it sounded like it was mostly built by the U.S. and Japan. I honestly wasn't listening all that well because I was at work and was supposed to be working. LOL.

Yup... PTWC. They monitor a bunch of seismographs and have bouys stationed all around the Pacific.

The seismographs alert them to an event (since Dave can't stay awake 24/7 to alert them of night time events) and the bouys detect and measure any pressure waves in the ocean generated by the earth quakes. It works pretty well. The early bouy measurements were about 3'. Applying that data to what they know about the various costal variations they can usually predict, within reason (albeit with a significant margin of error), how big a wave will be when it lands.

And yeah, cutting funding for this system would be a bad idea and kill people.

That's just amazing, does California have building codes like that? I would shit my pants if i were in that buliding though.

Of course we do. We're in quake country too and none of the tall buildings have fallen in any of the quakes we've had over the years. Obviously we've never had one that big in recent history with all the tall buildings but I'd hope they'd be able to withstand that big of a quake seeing as I work inside one of those tall downtown LA buildings.

The bad things is though that since we have so many ghetto people here, it wouldn't go as well as it is in Japan since all the ghetto people would loot everything.

I swear...if I get one more email from dumbasses I know saying this was "karma" because of Japan bombing Pearl Harbor I'm going to lose it and start driving to their houses to punch them in the dick.

It's sad that I think it's odd that people are calmly standing in line to receive supplies instead of breaking into electronic stores and stealing tvs.

Yea well it's just their culture. Japanese people are very different than westerners. My brother has lived there for four years now and married a Japanese girl and the way they act he told me about simple things is so different.

I would not have thought that it would be THAT spread out though (hours later). Could be wrong. The initial earthquake that caused the seafloor uplift that resulted in the tsunami lasted about 2 mins. None of the aftershocks produced a tsunami as far as I know.

I was watching the local news earlier, and they were talking about Crescent City, CA. The first tsunami surge hit there at about 0830, there were many other surges through the day, and even a 7 foot surge that hit about 6 pm.

I swear...if I get one more email from dumbasses I know saying this was "karma" because of Japan bombing Pearl Harbor I'm going to lose it and start driving to their houses to punch them in the dick.

It's an absurd idea...especially when it's "karma" for crappy anime and tentacle pron...plus the shitty (WTF every it's called) "little girl music" that uhohs posts all the time.
"Gawd'll get ya for that!"

I was watching the Anderson Cooper 360 show on CNN a few minutes ago. They were talking about the nuke plants that are down. Apparently, on the one plant, they've expanded the evacuation zone to 10 Km, and 6 Km for the other plant. That's a pretty good indication that they're having serious problems trying to get the cooling system back on line.
They had some excellent footage taken by folks with their cameras...the damage and devastation is shocking...and it's mesmerizing. I have a hard time turning it off!

I only hope we don't see pics like this one from the 2004 tsunami:
NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH!

You know what, though? The 5th or 6th biggest earthquake in recorded history followed by giant tsunami and the death toll is only at 1400 so far? That's just amazingly brilliant planning and execution, Japan.
