I think you can do it. Last year I went from being in no shape at all to being able to run 5 miles in 45 minutes on the treadmill. I trained by running three times a week, and pushed myself each time to go further. My runs were all uphill too. For the Cal students, after two months I was running from Scenic and Virginia (close to Bongo Burger on Euclid) all the way up to the Tilden Park entrance, three times a week. I hurt my knee, probably running too hard on the downhill run back so I stopped.

That's dooable.

Here's a pace calculator, if you wanna figure out more times:

I know it's 7 1/2 minute miles, but I don't know if that's doable for 8 miles.

Ever done speed training? Intervals (Fartlek, etc.), hill work... Check this site again and run a search.

Never had, but that looks like a good site, thanks. The problem is, they talk about that working for 5k - 10k runs, whereas this would be more like 13K.

Thanks Train

Cool. Care to post a link to race results showing that. Faster than 6:30 miles for 9 miles while racing? You'd be in the top 5 of any amateur half-marathon race in the country if not #1.

6:30 pace for 9 miles is decent but its no where close to top ranking speed. I'm not slighting Kauru, I'm just saying that you apparently have no idea just how fast good runners are.

For reference, a decent amateur runner will do a marathon in 3 hours. Thats 180 minutes for ~26 miles. Which is less than a 7 min mile pace.

Mark

I can post links to amateur half marathon results where 1:24 will get you in the top 5-10. I presume you can too?

8 miles is only 12.8 k.

You said 1-5, if not 1st. Want to change your mind a third time?

I'm guessing you weren't working out your legs with weights. That will aid immensely in warding off injury as well as giving you more strength.

Oh right, duh. 1.6K = 1 mile, not 2.2k. I'm an idiot. However, I blame my poor heart that can barely get the blood all the way up my gigantic body to my brain.

When I was in my best shape (about 2 years ago) before my 3rd marathon, I ran 8 miles in 57 minutes in a race - without any real hard training i did the same distance in 1:02 this time..I completed my best marathon in 3:47 which is roughly 8:45 pace..but in actuallity the first 20 miles are done 7:45-8 and the last are done around 10 mins, hehe

You have a gym membership. So why not just test it yourself? Put a treadmill on at 8 mph and see how long you can do it. For someone your size it may be difficult, but it is certainly doable with enough effort.

Yeah, I ran 10miles today at a 7:45 pace... snow and ice slowed me down a bit... but it is very dooable, if you put your nose to the grindstone...

Treadmills measure nothing. You don't actually have to propel yourself forward. Also, I'm never getting on a treadmill for fear of breaking it. I just don't trust the things.

You ran, outside, in snow, for nearly 78 minutes? What can you do in warm weather?

When I ran cross country back in 1988, we would run about 6-10 miles on our hard days. Yea, that isn't much today, but I digress....

We had some people that could easily hit that hour mark for 8 miles. I could do it in just under an hour but of course I was never the best runner on the team. Didn't get my varsity letter until my senior year. Oh well.

So how tough do you think it will be for me to do it?

Just to give you an idea, I run 3 miles about 2 to 3 times a week. I'm 6'0", about 185 to 190lbs. I'm in good cardiovascular shape, but definately don't have a runner's body. I'm a pounder, not a gazelle, when I run. I hate every minute of it, but it's a great cardio workout. If you're built like me as opposed to somebody who's built for running this may help.

I do 3 miles in about 30 minutes and change. That's about a 10 minute mile. It averages to be right aroudn 6mph. I start off relatively slow, around 4 to 5 mph to warm the body up and then continually crank up the speed till I'm around 7 to 7.5mph. Any faster for me and the joints start to ache, the feet start to throb, and a little bit of shin splints starts to come up my left shin.

Well, I used to run 5 - 7 miles every day, cross country, so I know I can make the distance. I also know I could EVENTUALLY do this. However, my question is whether or not I could work up to this by the end of April.

Um, yes, they'd tell you a whole lot. Can you physically move your legs that fast? Can your heart keep it up? Etc. But if you don't want to try one that is acceptable.

You might be right, but at that point, I might as well run the track.

I wish I could run far. I can walk fast for hours, but running is just too hard on my knees. Damn you, genetics! Treadmills work fine though, but it's just not the same as getting the scenery.

8 miles in an hour is pretty easy considering that's like 7.5 minutes a mile.

I cna do a 7.5 minute mile, but doing that 8 times in a row is tough, and requires a lot of conditioning. It would be especially tough for someone like me that's starting from nowhere. I would probably be pretty winded, right now, after three consecutive 7.5 minute miles.

To the OP (Ilmater):
8 miles in 1hr by April 29? Hmmm. You are a big dude. No, you are a HUGE dude which could pose a setback in your goal. What's your age?

If you hadn't attempted distance running once before, I'd be inclined to suggest you find another bet to take. But your 7miles at 1.5hr is a starting point and shows that you could be capable of achieveing your goal if you really put your mind to it. However, how long ago did you run those 7miles? Assuming you ran it yesterday, and you are seriously determined at realizing your goal, then April 29 is sufficient time. But you need to start now, not two months from now. Shaving 30 mins off of your previous time for a 7 mile distance will require extreme dedication on your part, partly due to your physique. And even if you are determined to see this through and end up training regularly, your size may prove to be a bit much for the constant pounding your legs/knees/feet will go through. Which means you may experience some injury related setbacks if you don't listen to your body.

Let me know if you really are serious and willing to see this through, and maybe I can help point you in the right direction. As a reference I'm 31yrs old, 5'11, 122lbs and have been distance running for 7yrs, parrticipating in the Houston Marathon 4 times with a PR of 3hr 6mins. I run 6 days/week at around 50miles/week and train with a group of other serious runners. Finding a group to run with is critical to achieving your goal.
