Sorry, guys, been away for a couple days.

The company I ordered from listed the mobo -E with NO raid, but when I called they confirmed it did, so I'm golden. I also had to change my order a little bit (till I put more money on my card!!!!), had to put off the video card and hard drives temporarily. I also decided to keep my case, so I ordered an Enermax 550W and some fans to upgrade mine.

This will be cool, though, cause now I'll get to see the difference the cpu, mobo, and ram make, then later the difference the hard drives and video card make. Should have my stuff today before noon, so when I get off work...........

Hey everyone, well, I got my stuff yesterday and put it together after work. I didn't power up last night because it was really late and I was dog tired and didn't want to screw anything up. Plus I had to work today. I thought I'd explain what I did so maybe someone might see something I missed or don't know about.

After I pulled the mobo out and looked at it for a while (I have a thing for motherboards!), installation went smooth as silk. I disabled the firewire and raid for now, other than that I didn't mess with anything. I'll go thru the bios tonight. My Enermax PSU (what a great looking psu!) has a two-wire strand with a 3-pin plug on the end (like the cpu fan plug) that I'm not sure where it goes. It says it's for the fan monitor, should that go to the PWR FAN connector or the Power Supply thermal connector on the mobo? The connector fits on the PWR FAN connector but only has two wires, It doesn't fit on the thermal connector, though that is two pins. ????? A little help please on that one.

The CPU installation was a snap, impressively easy, which I'd heard about P4's. The massive heatsink was a little different, I went the AS3 route, and after cleaning it thoughly I "tinted" it, which went well. I then applied the grease to the CPU and installed the HSF, all which went okay, I really just don't know if I put the right amount of grease on it or not. I put a thin coat with a razor and smoothed it out real good, but afterwards I started thinking I didn't put enough on, and now I kinda wonder if I put too much on. I'm a little worried that it might have spoodged out the sides and might hurt something, and wonder if maybe I should pull it back off to see (and wipe up any spoodged grease). Any opinions?

I love the mobo, normal Asus quality and the package contents were good. I do, however, have a minor complaint. It didn't come with a little bag of hardware like they used too, and though I have plenty of spare standoffs and screws, my bitch is that that bag costs what, a buck or two? If that? And I paid how much for the mobo? Enough said. But that's minor, Asus still rocks in my book. What exactly is worth installing off the CD? I never installed anything with my old board. Any opinions on that?

Also, the Pioneer 106S is one good-looking drive. I've got my hard drive on primary ide and my dvd and cdr on the secondary. And that's about it. Sorry this was so long. Any opinions or tips are well appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that 3pin plug is a fan RPM in the PSU.
dont bother plugging it in. it spins so slow that the bios will alarm you.

Arctic silver should be spread out thin like paint - not like butter. (if that helps)

you didnt say what OS you are running....
forget the CD and get the latest Asus PCprobe, Intel Inf drivers, and Intel Application Accellerator. you will also need drivers for the Promise RAID when/if you decide to use it.

Thanks Thugs, I think I'm overly paranoid about the AS3, I think I'll be okay. Gotcha on the PSU connector, I have another question about that though. The three fan connectors on the motherboard (CPU fan, PWR fan, Chassis fan), I got the CPU fan plugged, what goes in the other two, anything? Do I just pick a fan for the chassis fan? My case fans don't have those kindof connectors.

Thanks for the advice and the quick reply, you must be goin to bed soon, so I appreciate it!!!!!

the other 2 fan headers would be for a motherboard chipset fan or a upgraded video card fan, etc.
dont use those headers for case fans unless they are low power low speed fans.

BTW, running WinXP (don't know how much that's gonna affect my overclocking....)

Oh forgot to mention the CPU is a Malay, is that one of the good overclockers? I didn't see a date on it, I suppose that would come up during POST maybe? I have some numbers off the CPU if that would help.......

Does anyone know for sure if I have one of the "primo" cpu's? It's a Malay SL668, L289B282-1238. I didn't see a date on the cpu, I'm assuming that it'll show up during the POST or in the bios or something.

Anyone?

so whats this about inf drivers and such? where do i go to get updated stuff for my cpu, its a 1.6A, and once i get this stuff how do i instal it... will this force me to redo my OC and everything else, or will i be able to put these new driver stuff in and just go on about my business?

only you will know if you have a "primo" chip. dates, build locations, purchase locations, have nothing to do with it.

intel inf drivers are at the INtel site. (v400.1015) just install them, check your drives for "DMA on", and go about your business.

System's up and running at defaults, been running for a day and I'm ready start playing! My cpu temp is sitting at 34C, which is good considering I am only running two case fans that are ancient. Couple observations...PC Probe had errors during install (seems like it didn't recognize chipset?!), and it's running properly, has anyone had the same? Also, my CPU Freq Multiple is grayed out in bios (it says that means I have a locked cpu, is that true?).

Where would be advisable to start? I'd like to bump it to 2.1, then increase as the system will allow. Any thoughts? Thugsrook?

Update:
Still can't get PC Probe to work correctly. Upped the FSB to 133, cpu running at 2.1, ran 3D Marks and got a 4291 score. That can't be right, can it? Isn't that way high? I'm still using my GF2 GTS (temporarily), and the ONLY thing I've changed so far is the fsb. Sandra is reporting my ram running at around 350MHz. I'll post some specific numbers later.

Update 2:
Disregard, I don't know why I was thinking that it was a high score. Brainfart. I was expecting around a 3000 score with my current crap card.

get the latest version of PCprobe 2.1806.
just crank up the FSB and add cpu voltage (2 notches at a time) if it crashes/is unstable.
keep an eye on your temps.

I can only find v2.16, could you help me out with a url, Thugsrook?

You're talking about CPU core voltage, right? two notches at a time?

My temp at 2.1 is holding steady at 34C.

My memory settings are 2-3-3-6, is that cool for Corsair PC3200?

Thanks a bunch..............

oops i typoed - v2.1608

yes 2 notches - it will probably take yet another notch or 2 after that to make it 100% prime95 stable. so dont waste your time - 2 notches

not a bad temp for your case.

may as well set your ram to Cas222/5 - i already know its 100% stable at the speeds you are going to run.

Update!
P4 1.6A @ 2399 34C
P4B533-E
2 X Corsair PC3200 @ 2/2/2/5
600MHz FSB
1.6 Vcore
GF2 GTS

Marks (I'm not exactly sure how you guys normally do this...)
Sandra
CPU 4702/2918
Media 9327/11694
Memory 1551/1551 (Absolutely horrible marks compared to 845E, PC3200 cas 2.5, which is basically same system !?!, any thoughts?)

3DMarks
4317 (Please don't laugh, my GTS is very sensative )

I only ran these once, I don't plan on staying here long, must go faster! 3DMarks locked up on first boot, Sandra threw me OUT of Windows on second. Upped cpu voltage to 1.6 and all is well (Thanks Thugs). So far this rocks, I'm so happy with this setup! See how it runs for a day and I'll kick the bus speed up to 166. CPU temp is 33C as I type this. Can't find how fast the memory bus is, guess I could do the math..........

Hey THUGSROOK! Do you use the wire mod with the overvolt jumper? I too have the same board and chip and even the same pack date. I'm waiting on the new mem to try and take it higher.. But I was wondering does the wire mod help with the overvolt jumper?
