well, I don't know why people who start a thread on a forum, think they can dictate the terms of the thread or think they somehow own the thread...but

the 8600GT should work in the Dell Inspirons, but as already stated it is only a mediocre at best card for gaming. You can probably run Crysis on Low settings at fairly low resolutions. I wouldn't try running an 8800GT in a Dell Inspiron without replacing the PSU with something more powerful.

1. other than gaming, will e8400 be able to outperform q6600? other than gaming i do some work on MATLAB and i convert movies from one format to other. wont q6600 be better for that?

2. say,if i get graphics card 8800 or some other good card, wont 6600 be able to play games like crysis at high resolution and settings?

1. In some applications the e8400 will beat the q6600, and in other applications the q6600 will win. Most games will take better advantage of a higher-clocked dual-core. Either way, neither processor is slow! I don't know much about movie conversions, but I guess a large factor in the converter's performance will be whether it utilizes SSE4 (which the e8400 has, q6600 does not) and if it supports quad-core.

2. The problem with running Crysis is that even the most recent GPU's can't run it @ high resolutions with high graphics settings. With the 8600GT, you should be able to play Crysis @ 1024x768 with medium settings.

Perhaps within the year Nvidia will have a video card that approximates the 8800gt's performance with the power draw of the 8600gt.
