i am buying a 8300 gs with a pc which has Q6600, 3gb ram. I want to clear the following doubts which i have:

1. its written as geforce 8300gs w/ TV out, VGA and DVI.? What does it mean? and what is DUAL DVI?

2. Will i be able to play games like NFS MW, CARBON and UG2, PROSTREET at good FPS at medium to high settings? Upto which level of games can i play on it?(please specify some names)

3. how good(bad) is it in comparison to 8600 gt? Its performance?

Are you serious? I can't tell...
Assuming that you are then let me impart the answers to your questions:

1. The card has a vga (analogue monitor connection) & DVI (digital monitor connection)as well as a connector for output to a regular tv. Dual link dvi means that it can support high res monitors (2560x1600 etc).

2. NO! You may get an acceptable frame rate from games like solitaire & mine sweeper though

3. The 8300gs is nvidias slowest possible card available & is not meant for gaming at all but for office pc & HTPC usage. The 8600gt while still pretty low end is miles better than the 8300gs.

However if you want to play modern games with high quality settings above a 1280x1024 res & to avoid severly bottlenecking the very good q6600 then you're going to need at least a nvidia 9600gt or Ati 3850, although a 8800gt would be a better (if little bit more expensive) match for your PC.

Examles here:
MSI GeForce 9600GT 512MB 256-bit $134.99 AR from newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814127355

MSI OC GeForce 8800GT 512MB 256-bit $167.99 AR:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814127329

Both of those cards are OC'd, come with better cooling & will allow you to play the games you listed & other newer games with high settings @ a res of 1680x1050 with decent fps.

PS what motherboard does the PC have?

1. you probably are thinking about dual-link DVI. dual dvi would be 2 dvi ports. dual-link is a dvi port that can support a 30" monitor which ALL 8300GS cards have.

2 / 3. the 8300gs is really really slow. its 64-bit memory and 8 shaders. the 8600gt which is a low to midrange card now has 4 times as many shaders, with 128-bit memory and faster clocked memory, thus probably in the area of 4 times faster. and its STILL considered fairly slow now. an 8600gt can probably play most of the games you mentioned at medium res. an 8300GS really cant play any games outside of older games like say warcraft 3. it might hav eproblems with world of warcraft. you could probably play quake 3 or the sims on it. that said, the 8300GS really is only out there so companies can put it in a machine and be vista aero capable and because it has a hardware HD decoder for say hd-dvd and blu-ray.

I guess the 8300GS is about as fast as a 6200 card. No way you'll manage to play recent games at acceptable frame rates with it. Like stepone said, this is a card made ONLY for office and HTPC usage and nothing more then that. For games you really have to dig deeper into your pockets.

ok guys i got your point! and thanks for showering in so many replies!

Actually i live in INDIA where 8600 is available in ($150) and 8800 in Rs 12000($ 300). I am configuring a dell inspiron 530 with all the specifications i mentioned. As it has a choice to get 8600 gt instead of 8300 gs so I WILL TAKE 8600(cant extend my budget after that!)

1. Will 8600 work with inspiron 530? I dont know anything about its power supply

2. Will that be able to play NFS races and CRYSIS at medium settings and viewable resolution?

You might get 25fps in crysis if you run low-medium settings @1024x768 with a 8600gt but you're going to struggle in crysis to achieve consistent playable framerates with anything less than a 9600gt or 3850 512mb.

You really need to find out what power supply & mobo you're getting with that dell...

1. MOTHERBOARD: I am getting a G33(don't know anything else about it) which i think supports 8600 gt. It has a power supply of 350 Watts but it is not written anywhere on dell's website. Please try and and find it out and let me know about it. The computer is DELL INSPIRON 530.

2. Play: By play i mean it screen should not freeze in between and a normal user like me is not able to see frames freezing(stopping and moving kind of thing!). Will that happen with 8600 gt with quad core Q6600 and 3 gb ram?

i have an 8600gt in my box and it can run a game like c&c 3 @ 1920x1200 medium quailty.

then again c&c3 is not nearly as new as crysis.

I don't really agree. I have an fanless 8400GS in my MCE box and it handles everything I throw at it with ease. I can't tell any difference from that and my main box with way more power in general areo stuff and MCE stuff.

For starters, what do you need a quad-core cpu for? If the most intensive thing you're going to do on this computer is game, just get a faster dual-core (e8400) processor, it'll be better for gaming.

Second, the 8600GT will provide a minimal (at best) experience in Crysis. Instead of paying $150 to upgrade to an 8600GT why not get the system with the basic card (8300GS) included and just buy a faster card? (Then sell the 8300GS to someone who doesn't know any better!)

If you can get an 8800GS, 9600GT, or 8800GT with a fast dual-core system you will be good to go.

EDIT: WooHoo! 1000th post!

If you're building a gaming rig on a limited budget, then skip the quad core cpu, get a dual core instead, and put the price difference towards a better video card. An 8600gt is a low end card by today's standards, and if you want decent gaming performance, then get at least a 9600gt.

on dell india website i.e www.dell.co.in. they are selling E8400 but they are chaging $100 more for it and that too when everyone knows 8400 is cheaper in comparison to Q6600.

But i cant do anything about it as i have a P4 computer right now which i built myself(almost!) and it has caused seires of problems. i am 19 years old so my family feels that i dont have enough knowledge of computers and they are not willing to give me money to build it. so i have to go for DELL. And in dell, either they are giving E4400 or Q6600. so i think that 6600 comes in budget and I AM Sure that it is better than e4400 so i am thinking about it rather. And i willl surely upgrade my Graphics card to 8800 or something good in a year or 2.

Do i have any other choice. please Check out dell.co.in and customise a pc for me if possible.

1. other than gaming, will e8400 be able to outperform q6600? other than gaming i do some work on MATLAB and i convert movies from one format to other. wont q6600 be better for that?

2. say,if i get graphics card 8800 or some other good card, wont 6600 be able to play games like crysis at high resolution and settings?

Bottom line is that if u have to get a dell then you're screwed (gaming wise) as you're locked into 1 of 2 bad choices for graphics.

Better off getting the 8300gs now & saving up for the 8800gt forgoing gaming in the mean time.

Dell sucks*!

(*just look at the Rs 1093 extra they want to install xp instead of vista & there's no info at all on what PSU & mobo u get)

Run the bubbles screen saver, Use flip quickly or play an HD-DVD with aero and tell me how it does. I have a 8400GS in my wife machine and it's noticeably slower in vista than my 9800GTX in all of the above cases.
