840 Non-EVO FW Released

Hey guys,

I plugged in a 840 at work today to mess around with and Magician prompted me for a FW update.

The new FW is DXT0AB0Q

Lo and behold, Advanced Optimization now lets you run on the 840:

The only thing i can't currently test is whether, like the 840 EVO, it brings a new algorithm that immediately adjusts the voltages, since i don't have any 840s with old data. I'm setting one up now though and gonna do the FW update once i start seeing degradation and post my results. If anyone else has an 840 with old data, please put before and immediately after the FW update screenshots so we can see if it comes with a new algorithm as well.

Finally gives me a reason to power up the 840 I had laying around as an emergency drive as well.

I have gotten slow reads with that FW DXT09B0Q and I run diskfresh every six months to resolve the slow reads.
That 840 is in my 2500k with only a 100 hours and 250 power on it.

Just updated mine from DXT09B0Q -> DXT0AB0Q. Samsung website only shows the ISO for DXT09B0Q. Too bad the one I had sitting is an empty drive. Can't test it. It's out of warranty too, but I'll still use it as a spare SSD.

I had update magician before the new FW was listed.
Should be interesting to see how read speed stays in in a few months I ran diskfresh just 2 months ago to be safe.

I had a 840 with old data that i left unpowered since July of 2015. On Monday, one of my coworkers reformatted it because they didn't know i had it like that purposely so if the FW update came out, i could test before and after. Literally a DAY before the FW was released.

Interesting how the 840 will fix itself, the more you read the slow data. It's also nice to a see a speed boost! Could be a consolation price for taking so long to come out with an update but it's the same conclusion I had... it's out of warranty so... meh? As with most SSDs I own I replace them now when they are out of warranty.
