I had my 8400 on a DFI 965 Dark before I got this Abit.If I remember correctly it did take more volts for the same OC than this P35 chipset does.

You shouldn't be "spreading" the as5, just do a vertical line.... http://www.arcticsilver.com/in...ute_step2intelas5.html

The problem with that is usually most people don't put the hs on and clamp down both sides at once, its usually one side then the other making the spread bias to the last side you clamp. Imagine a whooppe cushion, when you sit on it, all the air is released to the other side making a wonderful sound, lol - thats my analogy

Maybe it isn't giving the correct temp to the system?

Check with RealTemp_2.5. It have support for E8xxx.
I tried this and it does show it 5C less than the other monitors. So that is good. So instead of idle 45C, it is actually 40C. Since it was actually a pretty hot day in Seattle, and in my computer room, this isn't a bad temp for a CPU running at 3.6 GHz.

I did have trouble seating the heatsink fan, so I might take it off tomorrow and try again.

Im waiting on mine to get here and plan to OC it to 4gz, i'll be using the Gigabyte GA p35 motherboard with 2x2gb g.skill ddr2 1000. I currently have the zalman 9500 or 9700..(can't remember i got it so long ago) but am thinking about upgrading to the Vendetta 2 if need be.
Any advice on the matter would be great. (voltages and what not)

Thanks

I just got 4.05 stable on a Striker II Formula.

set bus = 450mhz x 9.0 multi = 1800FSB

RAM (Hyper-X): 5-5-5-15 2T @ 2.0v

CPU Voltage: 1.43750v (I found this to be very important for stability)

NB/SB = Auto

This has been passing Orthos/Everest/gaming stress for the last 24hours no prob.

Personally I would drop the FSB to 445 and see if that let me use the next lowest Vcore and still be @ 4ghz. Is that the voltage you set in BIOS, or the actual voltage? (CPU-Z, ETC)

I am at my signature stats for several months now without problems, and know others on the boards do but some will not. I got a good chip early I guess. Memort issues was giving me problems and the latest abit bios helped also. Better be sure your memory will handle these overclocks because the ballistics I had would not at least running 1-1.

I set BIOS to 1.43750

actual, CPUID = 1.440 (may shift slightly)

The line I do not want to cross is 1.45. So I am pretty much done.

well, i went for 4.2, but i think my ram is holding me back. apparently it doesn't OC too well. right now it is running around 847 or so. when i tried 4.2, i was 930ish i think. i set it to +.3v on the ram, and it still failed prime in under 15 seconds. although it helped, because when it was still at +.1v, it failed instantly. thinking either some better ddr800 or some good ddr1000 wold fix me up.

Would an e8300 with a multi make it to 4Ghz seeing that it would take a high fsb to achieve this ...i think it's a 470, yeah, 3995Mhz... the multi on a 8300 is 8.5

should, depends on your board. but it would be harder on you board though since it's running a high fsb.

Had mine running at 4.05 since opening week. No issues so far. I really should check my temps now that it is heating up.

Yep, I've been running mine at 4Ghz (8x500FSB) since I picked it up during that Microcenter special a few months back. I'm running on an ASUS P5K-E currently with 8GB of the same G.Skill DDR2 1000. I had to really tweak my voltages to get it stable and pick up one of those Corsair Dominator fans for the RAM, but all it all its running great now.

Oh yeah, I also tested it for a while on my DS3L in my other machine and it ran just as good on it.

Forgot to mention that I'm using my old Zalman 9500 for the fan

I'm totally 100% new to OCing. I am building a system around an E8400. Could someone please tell me what all of you mean by "stable" and how you know it is stable? Is there a guide that you can point me to that shows how to use whatever software you are using to figure out if your voltage/Ghz settings are stable?

I'm just confused as to what readings you take to figure this critical bit of information out. Cheers!
