Those are the 2500K CPU max. temp running at 4.6GHz going full out on Intel Burn Test. Vcore @ 1.320V

Do you think those numbers are unacceptable? It passed the test but should I continue to push for higher numbers?

I have CoolMaster 212+ in a Antec Sonata IV case. Is it the CPU cooler or it's just the nature of the beast when you o/c?

I think you didn't seat your cooler properly, and yeah, if you value the longevity of your system I would not run it like that...but your money not mine. Your temperature range is what i'd expect of the stock cooler, not a hyper 212+.

In any case, that's too hot for a Hyper 212+ with a Core i5 at 1.32V. You should be seeing temps on full load in the low-to-mid 60s ballpark. You should reseat the heatsink and to help temps make sure you use some decent TIM (thermal interface material, or thermal paste).

I used a moderate amount thermal paste that came with the cooler. Just a small drop on the heat sink and a drop on the CPU. Thinned it out with a credit card so it has a even and flat layer across both surfaces. It filled in all the crevices between the heat pipes and heat sink.

Are you absolutely certain that its making contact? I know air coolers are a giant PITA to install having done a few myself, and i'm not familiar with the 212 but i've used some noctua's and they can be a little tricky with having them secured all the way.

Honestly, with a good aftermarket cooler you shouldn't really be going past 70C. I am in the high 59-62 range with an H50 at 4.6ghz, using prime95....and the H50 is by no means high end. Anything past 70 with the 212 just sounds wrong.

I don't know how else to make certain that it is making good contact. I install the 4 screws 1/4 of the way on each corner and repeat until all 4 sides are tight. That's to make sure I didn't torque down one corner too much before I start on the other corners.

For this reason I refuse to fool with it even though it is cheap. Anyway, do you have to be at 4.6? Why not just drop down to 4.5 and knock a bit of voltage off?

4.5 most likely still won't get him in an ideal temp range....4.5 will still put him in the 80C range at load. He really shouldn't be getting past 70 unless he's using the stock intel cooler. OP, if you can't fix it with reseating it -- i'd highly recommend returning it and getting a new cooler. If you can spare the bucks the Noctua NH-14 is awesome.

You could also keep fiddling with it, i'm almost 100% sure its not making good contact with the CPU. Some air coolers are a GIANT pain in the neck to get seated properly.

Well, just for fun I tried going up in multiplier with leaving all other bios settings in auto.

I got to 4.9GHz and posted into windows and ran intel burn test for a few seconds to confirm it is indeed at that speed. VCore never went over 1.31 at full load but temp continues to climb so I cut the test short before it got too hot.

But I think I have a decent chip on hand with potential maybe I should invest in a better cooler. Do you agree?

I need something that's absolutely quiet, noise is a terrible thing.

(both times for the B2 and B3 board)

i just put 3 lines (on each of the copper pipes on the 212+)

at 4.5ghz, 1.3v, never goes above 70C.

what temp monitoring program do you use? what is the temp in BIOS(should be relative high ~ 50-60C)

(something like the below last image with 2 lines, but i put 2x more than this)

You would have to consider how high is your ambient temperature to know if it is too hot or not. At my place, a Core i7 2600 with a Hyper212+ can be within a 35-60C range and of course no overclocking. Using a casing that is optimized for silence and not airflow is also not going to help you cool down your PC either. You're Vcore is a little high and try tuning it down a little and don't expect too much of the Hyper212+ when you're overclocking till 4.5GHz. It is not a Noctua NH-D14 and definitely does not dissipate heat as well as the Noctua NH-D14 could.

post info about temps in BIOS(cpu is NOT IDLE in bios, so the temps will be elevated)

Somethings definitely not right, I'm at 4.5GHz and I'm hitting 54C max on prime95 with my 212+ and this is in an apartment at 80 fahrenheit. The 212+ requires a great deal of thermal grease because of the 4 heat pipes on the bottom of the heatsink aren't flush. Best strategy is to use 2 lines of grease.

Whats your budget? If you can spare the cash, the nocua NH-14 is definitely super quiet, in addition to being the best air cooler on the market from what i've seen.

It runs 85$ or so on newegg, although i've seen it on sale on amazon for less in the past.

my 2500k at 5100 mhz hits 85c with 1.56 volts and water cooling,some chips run hot but at 1.3 volts you should be well under 80c

Yes I am using the stuff that the cooler came with.

No I left everything to Auto so far and HwInfo64 reports Vcore @ <1.31 nder load.

I did all the burn test on MAX settings. I have 8 gigs of Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 1.65V ram.
