I hadn't heard about any issues personally. For how many people bought this card you would be seeing more posts about broken cards if there was a huge issue. This is NOTHING like the 7900GT days.

On a related note, and this is true for any expensive component you buy. Register your product, perferrably on the manufacturers website and keep your receipt/online purchase invoice # in a safe place till your never going to use the card again. Take a few minutes after purchase and you can make any possible RMA pretty painless.

According to the Visiontek warranty info page, you're incorrect saying it's a BS "lifetime of the card's useful life" crap warranty. The warranty specifically says:

the product will be free from manufacturing defects in material or workmanship for the lifetime of ownership of the product when given normal and proper usage."

According to this, for as long as you own the card it is covered under warranty. That goes beyond the regular Limited Lifetime warranty that you normally see. And if you should ever require warranty service, the card you receive is still covered by the original "lifetime of ownership" warranty.

VisionTek warrants the repaired or replaced Products will be free from manufacturing defects in material or workmanship for the remainder of the warranty period.

The only bummer is that the end user is responsible for shipping costs to and from the service center should the card require repair.

I personally put less stock in the length of the warranty than the quality of the service. It doesn't matter if it's a three year or lifetime warranty if it takes a month to get the replacement and you have to pay both ways for shipping out of China or something (not referring to any company specifically, just saying in general). Advanced replacement is a big plus for me, which is common among monitor and memory companies but is rarely seen elsewhere. I don't know of any video card company that offers that option.

My ati card overheated....it appears that ATI cards are having heating issues.

You don't own an ATI card. :disgust:

How did this thread get revived after more than 2 months....?

And how about those failure rates...?

I don't use Riva Tuner in my Ultimate 64, all I did was a BFG BIOS update.

No crashes nor any other problems with any games, the card idles at 64C, I don't even measure the temps under loads (Crysis and such). It just works fine!

Anyone else...?

Kind of a pain to have to manually control the fan. Its too loud at 80% all the time (plus wear/tear on fan?). I run it at 50% while not gaming and can't hear the fan. Anybody else have this problem? Thinking of RMAing the card (EVGA superclocked 8800GT).

I would download and install the new bios for your 8800GT SC. It was released just last friday and ramps up the fan speed based on temps. See if that fixes your issues before RMA'ing.

The BIOS I found has a date of 1-14-08, ver 62.92.24.00.xx is that the one? GPUZ shows mine as 62.92.1F.00.01. Their instructions are to flash before installing drivers but I've read about having to use 2 cards to do this, is that no longer the case?

Are you sure its a bios bug and not by design? I just bought a 8800gts 512mb and its fan is at 37%.

Also if there are a large number of failing GTs, it may just reflect the fact that its a huge seller, so bound to be more of it failing than other cards.

Ran my BFG 8800gt OC 512 edition from best buy at 734/1790/1920 from stock of 600/1500/1800. Manually increased fan speed in Rivatuner to 80% while gaming in 3d perf mode. Crysis load temps were around 84C. Card smoked crysis with my e8400 pushing it at 4ghz. Never had any issues with the card. the "fan sticker falls off" thing is real though ;(

I have bought a new cooler for every card I have purchased and they all still live. Personally I think stock coolers are generally built to last a year or so, because most won't bother with the rma process after that. Also as said earlier - it is very important to monitor heat in both the card and the case. Also think overclocking with a stock cooler is a bit unrealistic. Actually I only overclock rarely, just out of curiosity - as the gain in fps is generally not noticeable to my eyes.

If I had purchased an 8800GT (no reason for me to atm.) I might have purchased an aftermarket cooling. I didn't like the idea of that single slot cooler right from the beginning. Hence my "old" remark above. I'd go with a GTS512 if I were buying right now anyway.

that msi is the card to get if you upgrade keys. only $200 and 8800gts 512 performance. I agree with you, though, not much point in you upgrading atm. well, unless you find some sucker on ebay who thinks that if a 512mb 8800gts is great then a 640mb will be even better! I'm guessing that whomever came out with that naming scheme had a LOT of 8800gts 640's so sell...

I've heard bad things about a large batch of ram used in some recent 8800Gts namely ASUS and BFG. Anyone can confirm?
