I am planning to purchase the evga 8800GTS board, but i am not sure if i should get 640 vs 320MB of memory. I will be using a E6700 intel core2duo and 1 (or perhaps later, 2) 24" LCD monitors (1920x1200).

Many reviews state there is almost no performance difference between the 2 memory sizes. However, it is my understanding that at higher video resolutions you need more memory??

Good to know, thank you.

I notice my retailer sells thr evgA 8800gts 320mb "superclocked) ($335), but the 640MB version only comes at standard clock speed ($430).

Is there an overclocked version of the 8800GTS at 640mb ?

Go with the 640MB version. The 320MB version is cheaper, but gets outperformed by previous gen cards as you up the resolutions.

That 640MB GTS for 316 is a really sweet deal, jump on it.

If you can get the Geforce 8800 320 for $250 to $260 right now save the difference toward the next generation nvidia video cards. You don't need more memory for a high resolution with max details but you do need more memory for a higher resolution with max details and turning on FSAA and AF. If you only turn on FSAA or AF it doesn't make as big of a difference at all. If you don't turn them on to high either it doesn't make that big of a difference either. It depends on the games you play as well.

Though if you want to be able to play games like Company of Heroes and World in Conflict with max detail settings at your native lcd resolution. With maximum FSAA and AF enabled. Your better off not spending to much on a G80 video card and saving the difference for the next generation nvidia video card that you should get with at least 1 GB of video ram. The main reason you will need that 1 GB of video ram is for being able to play at high resolutions, which is a default for lcd monitors you can't change it no matter how much you want to, with maximum FSAA and AF enabled you need a lot of video ram. Now if you were playing at 1024x768 or a little higher this wouldn't be a problem. The GTX and Ultra with only 768 MB won't even be enough because it will take well over 768 MB of video ram.

It really depends on what games you play. Also, remember that evga has a 90-day stepup. If Nvidia releases an awesome $300 refresh product within 90 days, then you wouldn't be able to "step-up" if you get the 640.
