So I broke down and bought an 8800GTX, expecting to play this game with max settings but several areas of the game will drop to 20fps =/ Running it at 1680x1050.. Anyone else have issues with this game? Seems the only way to get those areas FPS back up is to change view/shadow distance.

The game is a pig with all details maxed. Either run under static lighting or try the Float32 mod.

I hear the float32 mod works wonders. The game has some issues once it starts raining no matter what system you're running if the lightning starts going.

The Float32 mod is terrific and provides smooth frames rates even with the rain and lightning. I'm using an X2 4400 with 2x8800 GTS in SLI. With an 8800 GTX you should get similar or better results since SLI doesn't add much if anything for STALKER.

What is the rest of your system specs like? Stalker is also a hog with the CPU and that could be holding you back. I play stalker w/ maxed settings at 1650x1080 w/ the frame rate never dipping into the 20's.

Yeah, Float32 for sure, I play everything maxed, dynamic lighting 1920x1200 no problem

I've watched my CPU usage and it's around 60-70% during these areas so I don't think that is the issue.

I'll the the Float32 mod.

Starting to think you are right actually..

Installed Float32 and had no fps increase. One of the more noticeable areas I lag is on the path to where you meet Mole and even more when it does the fly by of the fire fight (I'm talking 17fps here....)

I OC'd my cpu (X2 4400) from 2.2 to 2.4, and where I was getting 20fps it went up to 24fps, where I was getting 17fps went up to 21fps. Put it back at stock and fps went down again so no fluke. So I'm wondering, could a faster CPU really get me into playable framerates in this game and possibly others at max settings? I'm a little bummed having spent $550 for a new GPU and it's not exactly meeting my expectations.

Lavaheadache: What sort of fps are you getting in the areas I mentioned @ 1920 x 1200? You have all your settings maxed too?

Looks like it could be your CPU. Those areas are pretty CPU intensive because of all the soldiers in that location.

I'm guessing that you should really upgrade to a C2D (8800's are pretty much bottlenecked until you hit ~2.8ghz on a C2D) and if you haven't already, 2 gigs of ram.

It isn't your system, it is the game. I get the same thing with x6700 and 8800gtx SLI. The full dynamic lighting is supposedly jacked up and poorly coded, causing lots of people to have performance problems with it.

however buggy the FDL might be, it's not bad to the point where it causes a system like his to go into the 20's. there are plenty of systems that can play stalker w/ max settings w/smooth frame rates (50's-60's) consistently.

hmmm if power was an issue, the card would warn me at bootup or something right? I think I might be stretching it. 400W PSU. *All* molex plugs are in use lol >< 2 Raptors...

Or would the card automatically underclock while gaming if there is lack of power being supplied?

benchmark your card, see if it performs the way it's suppose to. If it's low across the board, then it could be your PSU. If it's only stalker that's taking the hit it's probably your CPU. At any rate, a 400W psu is pushing it for a GTX.

About 8k in 3DMarks06, pretty much the same as many others with X2 4400s listed on the orb.

Compared to those with E6600s and such that get 12k or so. The fps differences in the tests are between 10 and 20 more fps than what I get. One I had 37fps while other ppl had 57fps.

8,000 stock 8800GTX? I know my processor is faster than yours (X2 3600+ OC @ 2.6GHz, now 2.8GHz), but my 3D Mark 06 score with a stock 8800GTS and 2.6GHZ X2 3600+ is 8086. With my 3600+ @ 2.8GHz + 8800GTS @ 612/1950, I get 9,145 marks.

What is your individual scores?

I get 3746 SM2, 3671 SM3 at stock.

the problem with 3d mark is that with the default resolution being so low it's hard for the GTX to really stretch it's legs.
