8800's and Source problems?

I'm about to buy a new video card and I am looking at the 8800GTS 320MB from eVGA, but a fellow clan mate said that the 8 series are having a lot of problems with Source.

Is anyone with a 8800 experiencing problems in CS:S? Half Life? Any Source game?

Also is the 8800GTS 320MB a good card to get for 280? Any other cards to go for?

CS: S runs at around 45-60fps with my 8800GTS 320MB. However peple have said that my CPU bottlenecks the card too much. So before you buy the card make sure double check triple check whatever, that your CPU will not bottleneck the card. Make sure you have enough RAM, etc. before upgrading the Vid Card because you will not be blown away if a component is limiting the card.

That said I have heard that 8800's tear through current games so you should be fine. I don't get any glitching/artifacting or any other problem in SC and Dark Messiah

Edit: Just saw that you have an E6600. That is plenty I say go ahead with the eVGA 8800GTS. If you have enough money spring for the 640mb though, just in case you do upgrade your monitor to a higher res than 1600 x 1200.

My E6600 and 2GB RAM should be fine, the only thing I am worried about is the PSU (which should also be fine). I'm running 1680x1050 and am getting 120's with a x1900, so I should be perfectly fine even with a few slow downs because of other hardware.

Source stress test for my system is 238fps average


1280x1024 everything on high 4xmsAA 16xAF HDR full bloom, eveyrthing!


I get 220fps average on 8xmsAA, I dont know what the max fps is, but im guessing around 300-350... Ill check tonight.

The only problem I have with source is that when people get farther away in cs:s, its like a layer of dust covers them, its not realistic or does it look like fog....

I finally got around to buying HL2:EP1 so I could play it on my GTX, I didn't see any major problems in it.

My 8800GTS shipped with a Source game and it was fine. Half-Life 2 was fine too, so I doubt you have anything to worry about.

The fog problem still exists in Half-Life 2, CS:S and some others I believe.

I played through Dark Messiah at 1920x1200 with max everything (ultra textures, shadows, particles etc.) and 4x AA/16x AF and frames were locked at 60 except for a few outside areas. CS:S isn't as stressful graphically and also runs locked at 60 FPS. You should be fine at 1680x1050, but you may want to watch the AA slider as local video memory and system memory can really get taxed at high resolutions + AA + max textures (2GB system, 620MB video memory used).

There is still the fog issue, but its really not that big of a deal, more like a glazing that shifts independently from your POV and lighting sources. NV has stated its an application issue though, so don't expect a fix for it. I don't even notice it really unless I'm looking for it or there's nothing to shoot at.

Evga @ newegg for 260 AR is a great deal.

It runs really quiet too! Much less noise than my stock 7900gt or with the zalman vf900

your psu will be fine....SLI is another story

Are players washed out too? Does it affect your ability to hit them? That's my only concern, I know this card will blaze through all my games (hell, my x1900GT played all my games pretty damn well).

The fog problem is the only issue I have with CS:S on my 8800GTX. However it makes people sort of glow white at a distance through the fog... making them easier to shoot

I don't play CS:S but some people are reporting it makes things more difficult for them.
