I was reading reviews at Tom's Hardware and they were saying that a good 12ms monitor can be great for gaming (8ms is still better) but better for movies than an 8ms. First off, why is this so? Second, would I be better off getting a 12ms monitor for Interne, typing, and gaming (HL2, NFSU2, etc). I would like my games to look good and want DVI. Thanks

Well i own a 16 ms and i absolutly hate it. Ghosting really sucks and movies are crap. I miss my CRT. If i were you go for 6 ms or lower or else forget it! i dont believe 12 ms would be better then 6 ms doesnt make sense.

Many of the brand-new 8ms displays have a pretty poor viewing angle, and some of them are not great at reproducing very dark colors. This seemed pretty clear when I read their articles... but maybe they didn't hammer these points quite as much in all of them.

For gaming, I would think you'd want the lowest response time possible (so one of the newer 8ms displays would probably be best, but I'd check out the reviews at THG). Newer LCDs seem to be fairly interchangable for desktop use, but color reproduction can still be iffy on cheaper models.

I have a 25ms Viewsonic which ghosts like crazy, just returned a 16ms Dell 2001fp for a 2005fpw @ 12ms and it's perfectly gameable. I alternate between the Dell and a 21" Sony Trinitron with no notable ghosting at all and I'm damn picky.

I've also noticed no ghosting on a 2005fpw. My buddy has a 25ms Samsung monitor and I notice ghosting on it.

What brand/model? 16ms screens (like LCD's at all rated response times) vary greatly; some ghost, some barely ghost and some are all but unnoticeable with ghosting.

I have a 12ms Samsung 710T and it doesn't ghost at all to my eyes - movies and games do not ghost at all.

It really varies a lot from panel to panel, considering there's no real standard for response times. It's best just to read reviews and see other people's experiences. IMO 12ms should be fine anyway.

Go to one of those stores with lots of LCDs on display and check it out yourself. Personally I'm very tolerant to ghosting, and barely even notice it on my current 40ms screen, and don't notice at all on a friend's 19" dell screen.

Not to stray too far off topic... but are there any LCD's capable of 32-bit color?

The big problem with LCD's at the moment is that there are two ways of making them - one way has higher latencies (25ms) but full 24 bit colour, this tends to look better for movies. The other has lower latencies (8ms) but only 18 bit colour, this works better for fast games but looks worse in movies, photo editing, etc.
I think some people care more about ghosting then others - if that's your priority get one of the low latency ones, if you don't really notice it better to get one of the 24 bit colour ones.

In reply to above post I thought 32 bit colour had 24 bits as normal + 8 bits for transparency? - if that's the case the the transparency bits are pointless on a monitor as you don't look at one image through another one.

Many monitors including the Dell 2001FP have 24-bit color with 16 ms latency.

My CTX 17" LCD with a 16ms response time shows no ghosting in games, including Doom 3, Half-Life 2, CS: Source, Warcraft III, World of Warcraft, XIII, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

If not, how do these ones look?

I will be playing games, but I don't want to sacrifice a nice colorful image for 4ms faster response time if thats the case.

so with a better name monitor, how likely will the ghosting differences be between say 12ms and 8ms? I'd like to try and get better than 16ms

You need to see an lcd to determine whether it works for you. I'm on an old 25ms samsung (172N) and I can't see any ghosting on it. Some of us just got lucky I guess, my eyes must really suck .

So would going with a 12ms response time be a better balance between gaming and other things over an 8ms? Thanks

Not bad, I'd like to see some monitors in person, but it seems like online has the best prices (like newegg). Guess I'll see what I can find.
