9600XT resolution possibilites

I'm possibly getting a Dell 2001FP LCD for Christmas, but I'm worried my 9600XT won't be able to support the native resolution of 1600x1200. It's going to primarily be used on a gaming/LAN computer, so being able to reach that resolution would be very nice. I tried opening up UT2k4 to see if I could even select the resolution, and nothing over 1280x1024 is listed, the same with all the Steam games I play. Should I be concerned? Am I going to need a new video card?

it can run your desktop at 1600x1200 just fine.

games i wouldn't worry about so much. really, running a non-native resolution on an lcd isn't that bad

That card is fine for 1600x1200. I don't know any current card that would not be able to do that. The only reason the higher resolutions aren't an option currently is because your current monitor is not able to support them. If you tried to use 1600x1200 on your current monitor, it would probably explode. Either that or UT2K4 is incapable of going to 1600x1200, but that doesn't make sense.

Yeah, i just figured out the desktop part a second ago. the card was set to hide all resolutions my monitor dosen't support. Unchecking that let me go over 1280x1024 for my desktop, but did not change for UT.
I was more worried about the 9600xt's support for the resolution without forcing me to cut detail settings a lot during gaming.

don't forget that that running games at Higher resolution equal lesser frame rates. If you are currently getting 40 frame at 1280x1024, you will most likely be getting 15-20 frames at 1600x1200. Turnning off AA and AF will help you alot.

Yeah, i'm hoping I can still game decently with the 9600XT if I do get that LCD, or i'll probably have to upgrade to a 6600GT or something.

you mean 6800GT
and the upgrade is likely necessary
(for any new games)

. . . . gaming with a 9600xt is "stretching it" at 10x7 (anyway - 16x12 is gonna be a slideshow)

PLAN to uprade.

Overclocking the memory on the card will help increase your fps in higher resolutions.

I can't afford a 6800GT. It's going to either be a 6600GT AGP or an X800(the one in AT's article for today).

As for gaming on a 9600XT, I have no problems at all gaming right now at 1024x768, settings on nothing less than High on UT2k4 with 60 fps. 75 on the stress test in CS:Source with 50-60 during regular play.

1600x1200 on a 9600XT is definitely pushing it especially since you said you wanted to keep your details high. I'd say at the very least have a 9800Pro for that, but 6600GT/X800 would be better.

Ugh, almost seems like more effort than it's worth. I could spend a total of like 800-900 total for a 2001FP and a new video card to support it, or just get the samsung 17 i was looking at before the Dell deal came along. And I also just realized that the X800 from AT's article yesterday is PCIe only, so i'd be stuck with the 6600GT AGP basically, as I can't afford a 6800/X800 AGP card.

here's a novel suggestion . . . .

TRY 16x12 on your CRT now and see how well your 9600xt performs with the games you like. . . . see if you can tolerate it UNTIL you can afford to upgrade.
