Finally. I'm going to wait for a sale and try to snag one for $160-$180. Yes I will cry over $20.

Wow you really love NV..hehe to have waited this long when 4850s were selling in the $150-160s range for a month now.

I'm in the same boat as Wreckage. 9800 GTX+ or GTX 260 for me.

My poor 7800GT is really showing its age... can't wait to upgrade.

Not at that price, no. Wait for the rebates and sales to come and it might get more interesting.

With the OC ability of that card id take it over a 4850 all day. + EVGA lifetime warranty, customer service, step-up, etc.

W/E. I'd see how well the 4850 overclocks with a different cooler and an updated version of RivaTuner before I'd make any absolute statements like that.

Yep, once it dropped to $199 it became an interesting part, as its now mid-range priced. Once you factor in after-market cooling for the 4850 then it certainly becomes competitive. After considering maximum overclocks it may start encroaching on GTX 260 and HD4870 performance levels. Its often overlooked but 9800GTX+ SLI performs quite well compared to 4850CF and even 4870CF/X2.

I thought that I've seen some 4850's running around 700MHz. The 4850 is still a much better buy overall, in my opinion. It's as fast/faster at stock speeds, and my guess is will overclock just fine if you apply the fan fix. BUT, I think most of us would take an EVGA card over a Saphire any day. It's a real shame that AMD's partners aren't as creative with their perks/extras as Nvidia's.

Yup. It's Nvidia's board partners that are the real selling point here.

The only thing that concerns me about the 9800+ is that it has the same power draw at load as a GTX 260. Is it because to the core is running so much faster?

9800GTX+ = 8800GTS 512 rev3. Nothing new to go crazy about.

Besides AMD/ATI still offers a much better deal and they handles AA better. Though the SLI performance does look good.

Either way the next card I buy must have 1GB+ or forget about it.

1) an aftermarket cooler for the 4850 would add at least $35 to it.

2) I'm betting that the 9800GTX+ will drop in price (via, say, a $30-$40 rebate) in less than a month!

A 4850 with aftermarket cooler and 9800GTX+ with stock cooler should be in the same price range... and I would like to see a no-hold-bar comparison between these two configurations. No-hold-bar! Overclock to them both to the max, and see which is better. In addition, I would also like to see a Crossfire versus SLI deathmatch between these two configurations. My prediction is that an overclocked 4850 will edge out an overclocked 9800+, but in 2-card configuration, 9800+ SLI will own 4580 CF. And if game developers jump on the Physx bandwagon (and there is no reason to think that they won't), the advantage will probably shift to 9800+.

hmmm... here's what I would like to see in fantasy world... a release of the "9800+ GX2" version with 1GB mem, for around $300. But I don't think NV will do this because it would completely cannibalize the GT260 (along with the 4870 too).

anyway... i'm keeping my 4850 for now.. no sense burning anymore money while I'm jobless thanks to the economy!

- 9800GTX will lose in most modern games including GRID, Assissin's Creed, ET: QW, almost any game with 8AA
- you can also overclock 4850
- When was the last time you had a videocard fail on you? (i've never had one fail) Visiontek cards have lifetime warranty.
- Paying EVGA step-up prices makes the step up pretty unfavourable

So to pay $50 over 4850 because of "warranty" is like paying a 33% premium for warranty.

Looks like 9800GTX+ wins in every game at 1900/1200 4AA. Its not very attractive at $199 right now, but performance wise, its competitive. Not having 90C air dumped back into case is a plus, hopefully AMD will let their partners put dual slot coolers 4850.

Don't buy at MSRP, wait for (inevitable) rebate deals if you want this part. Otherwise, take a look at alternatives.

I'm gonna wait for rebates or some other price drop on this one. Got Newegg to Price Alert it for me whenever free shipping or a rebate happens. Should be a go whenever that happens. Bigger plus when I use my rent.com Rewards card to pay for half of it

Thanks for the info above, guys.

Anyone have these in stock other than the Egg? Sales tax in TN killing me.

I checked Outpost, ZZF, Ewiz, MWave, nothing.

Shoot I've seen them run them run 900mhz with a volt mod.

Actually I have only been waiting a week. I don't have time this week to install the other stuff I have (2GB more memory + Vista Ultimate) so I can actually wait another week no problem.

The 4850s just run too hot for me and the fan seems crappy. They are a great price otherwise. I'm also probably going to get an EVGA so I can get in on the step-up program. (GTX260+?)

So for me the GTX+ > 4850 (plus early benchmarks show it being somewhat faster).

The HD4850 doesn't run hot... The cooler just does a poor job of cooling it. All these people saying it runs hot don't know what they are saying. The heat is a direct consequence of the power a GPU uses. It doesn't use more power then a 9800gtx+, and I think it uses even less. The only thing is, because it's a single slot cooler, more warm air gets dumped into your case, whereas the cooler on the 9800gtx will exhaust lots of warm air out of the case.

If you apply the fanmod ( nothing fancy really, just a bios tweak, or tune it up with rivatuner ) and a HD4850 has very acceptable idle/load temps. If you have sufficient airflow in your case heat isn't going to be a problem either.

Like people mentioned before, only thing Nvidia has going for them are their board partners, but not all ATI board partners actually suck. The 9800gtx+ should either drop a little lower, to 170-ish or so before it really comes competitive. I mean, are you going to pay $40 extra for the dual slot cooler, and the extra 'perks' nvidia board partners give, you might not even ever make use of? Btw, shouldn't this mean that the 9800gtx drops in price, to 150-ish ? That be really great.

tough choices here..

HD4850

pro: faster, cheaper
con: heat/ bad cooler

9800gtx+

pro: physix, better cooler
con: more expensive, runs slower...

I'd take 9800gtx if they cost the same as 4850 (better cooler + physix ;D) ... but as of now, 4850 is much better deal IMO.

AMD needs to start adding dual slot coolers, people shouldn't have to spend $30+ just to be able to OC their cards.
