9800GTX+ upgrade. Thinking out loud.

Hey guys,
just thinking out loud about an upgrade I've been thinking about making. I got an i7-920 rig with a 9800GTX+, and I have been wanting to upgrade it.

EDIT: I game on a 1920x1200 monitor. When I game. I also do a lot of data analysis, Matlab, C, SPICE, CAD, etc.... hence the i7.

There's a 4890 on Tigerdirect right now for $170 but it doesn't have HDMI... otherwise I'd totally jump on that.

I've been waiting on the 5830, but I just don't think it's worth it at the price point, and the 5850 is a little expensive right now, yet I don't foresee Fermi really forcing any price cuts.

On the other hand, 5770 prices seem to have come down considerably... so I've been thinking about getting a Vapor-X, and Xfiring in a couple months.

I'd of course sell the 9800GTX+.

Just thinking out loud, and wondering if there's any flaws in my thinking?

or get a 2nd 9800GTX+, depends what LCD res you use and if you dont mind multi GPU's...
If it were me, I would wait the month out and see what effect the Fermi release has on ALL cards, if any 1st!

Guess I'm just getting into that upgrade mood again... you know how it is.

I gave up on the upgrade cycle when I built the rig in my sig...I dont get to play much now, besides which games are very expensive!

5770 is a nice card and pretty quiet. I upgraded from a 4850 and the boost in fps is noticable( occaisonally the 4850 falls below 30 which is horrible with vsync enabled). 4850 on the other hand felt faster than my 8800GTS 512 which should be about as fast as your 9800GTX.

Why is lack of hdmi an issue for you? My old 4850 had a DVI to hdmi adapter and I was able to get sound out via that. 4890 should have the same thing.
5770 cards do have bitstream audio and a dedicated hdmi port though which is better, but 4890 is a faster card.

Get an ATI DVI to HDMI dongle/adapter. Any ATI 3xxx or 4xxx card has the hardware for HDMI onboard, you just need the dongle/adapter. It will do 1080p over HDMI with 5.1 HD audio.

I've run an ATI 3850 to a 1080p HDTV with 5.1 surround sound with an ATI DVI to HDMI adapter.

The new 5xxx ATI cards will even do 7.1 over HDMI AFAIK.

didn't know they could do audio, that's great to know, thanks! Hmmmm... 5770 would be much quieter and less power hungry though, and DX11... not sure what I should do.
