That seems a tad more reasonable.

20% more than the cheapest 3870X2 but upwards of 40% faster.

What wrong with something like this?

Yes you can buy the adapters in a couple of places. That one costs $8 plus $6.60 priority shipping or $9 for UPS shipping. It adds another $15+ to the price of an already expensive card. For some reason, however, Nvidia doesn't recommend adapters.

Some of those adapters are very, very cheaply made. Some of the adapters I received with cards had loose metal connectors inside, they would slide in and out of place, or get pushed out the back when pressure was applied while trying to plug them in. The one that came with my 7900GT was pretty shabby. The problem with some adapters ( like converting a 6 pin to an 8 pin) is that 6 pin is only spec'd out for 75 watts. 8 pin is spec'd out for 150 watts. So if you use a 6 pin to eight pin adapter, your still only giving the 8 pin slot 75 watts when it calls for 150watts. Having a PSU with SLI/Crossfire certified 8 pin connectors most likely have 150 watts available to them. As per the spec.

PNY $529
Gigabyte $559
XFX $561

Not too shabby if you ask me. They should go down even more in the next couple weeks. Putting the 8 pin connector on the card makes sure that most people wont have the power supply to run it. And only BFG has the 6 to 8 pin adapter.

*applause*

no way ,,, i am almost speechless
--do they listen to us? Are other forums saying the same thing?

Great move, imo .. improving value on Launch week!

Using an adaptor can place an overload on the rails of your ps. Using a ps that has the adaptors incorporated into it already insures that the load is properly placed on the ps rails. This is why most high quality ps's come with dedicated pci-e power cords to properly distribute the extra load.

this is a difficult "grey area" imho. If you buy a crossfire or sli mobo, you probably get a high quality psu to keep all your hw fed. However, if you just got a p35 ds3L for $90, dumped an e2160 into it, and oc'd the s*** out of it, then you might not think about spending $100+ on a good psu. Combine that with a 9800gx2 and you could have some problems

I knew the price would drop but didn't think it'd happen in like 24 hours after the launch. lol.

If they came down to $500ish & got multi-display support functional, i might start considering one.

me too!

this is what i have been saying .. my own analysis
- i created a thread about it .. for me it was too much - all factors being considered regarding 'timing', etc..
Now i will reconsider my own purchase decision ... it might be an awesome new trend! i hope. i hope this is not just mwave for some reason.

I don't know if it's going to be possible with 9800 GX2. You really need a hardware solution (one chip that sends out the video signal) for proper multi-monitor support. I could be wrong but seeing NV had to flip the DVI port on each PCB, AMD-like multi-monitor support doesn't look feasible with GX2.

i know .. but it has been 'hinted' - here by a Focus Group member [i believe] - that NVIDIA is working on it to enable it
[maybe it was only for SLi ... i don't remember]

i bet they have been working on it for a long time ... but now that AMD recently has perfected it, NVIDIA *needs* it .. i think it does work a little like that

my own speculation ... but we did hear that it is [or sounded to me like it was]

they can just take a few techs off the 8800 driver issues and re-route them to work on multi-monitor support. Don't worry, nobody will notice that they're gone

Dual monitors work you just have to switch modes is all.

You have to disable SLI for more than one display to work.

So basically, a major PITA, since i have zero interest in disabling my secondary monitor at any time (including during gaming, as it gets used for temps monitoring, IM chat, IRC, etc.

And when i spend the amount nV wants for their SLI mobos or in this case, their sandwich solutions, having to switch SLI on every single time i want to run a game?

LOL no thanx.

Oh that is just silly. There's now way I can not do without my second 3007. I must have my spectrum analyzer anchored in that window OR ELSE! hehe

You know, you could just get a cheapie PCI 6200LE or something meantime for the second monitor. If you're already blowing several metric asswads on the card, SLI board, etc etc. What's another few $?

You could even hint at having 3 nvidia GPUs to enlarge your e-peen from King Kong to Godzilla-like proportions.

BTW, those of us with a DS3L and E21xx OCd to hell and back know the value of quality power. It's the guys buying a '1200 watt' Deer to power their new GPU with overinflated requirements you gotta worry about.

Can you get a simple PCI video card and use a second monitor on that concurrently while gaming/using SLI on a GX2?

Or will the software prevent any sort of secondary display while running SLI?

Not that I need a 2nd monitor at home. My work computer has 2 monitors because it's good for productivity. At home I just game basically.
