the reason the lips sync is because valve put a lot of effort into making lip animations capable of every vocal sound (at least english).

If you can find it, I recommend checking out the video labeled "StillSeeingBreen-v1.1-HQ.wmv". It's a HL2 cut-scene and animations done to Breaking Benjamin's - So Cold song...just AMAZING!

yeah, that one is a nice usage of the engine, but overall very... "meh"
