Reality check:

1) Diamonds are not useless. They are the hardest naturally-occuring mineral and thus have dozens of real uses besides ornamentation. Some of the best cutting blades are coated with powdered diamond.

2) Diamonds are rare. Yes, the diamond producers artificially restrict the supply, but even if they didn't, diamonds still wouldn't be "less valuable than loose leaf paper". There just aren't that many of them, and many tons of rock must be processed to produce a few carats of diamond.

3) Diamonds are uniquely beautiful. In addition to being the hardest mineral, diamonds also have the highest angle of total internal reflection of any naturally-occuring mineral. What this means is that, when properly cut (an art form in itself), a diamond will cause a ray of light to bounce around inside it many times before emerging at a totally different angle, and often refracted into a totally different color. This gives diamonds their unique sparkle and "fire". Other natural gemstones can't compare.

4) I'm not affiliated with any diamond producer, and am not in the gemstone or jewelry business in any way.

5) The diamonds smalldiamonds.com is giving away (or not) really are almost valueless.

6) Chicks dig 'em. Whether it's because they really are beautiful gemstones, or because they're expensive and thus a token of love, diamonds will get you very well laid.

7) Diamonds are a good store of value. While not as fungible as gold, they're as durable, and a lot more compact.

Free diamonds are traded for guns? Sounds like a good deal for the guy that gets the guns. Oh and don't buy any modern electronics. Tantalum capacitors that are used in most cellphones and small electronics today are highly valuable. Its primarily found in Africa and its fueling wars in the Congo. Thats why I don't buy electronics. I don't even own a computer. Never even used one in fact. I'm a total Ludite.

But this whole guns for diamonds is new to me. I'm kinda wondering why they chop peoples arms off when they have guns. Seems to me if you just traded free diamonds for guns(I want to meet the guy taking free diamonds for guns, I have some beachfront property in Arizona I want to sell him) you would shoot their arms off. I mean why have guns if your still stuck using old technology. Also if they chop the arms off of babies, children and adults, wouldn't it be easier just to say everyone. Or are the elderly not included in the adults count. Or maybe its because when you get old you don't have arms, because when you were a baby, child or adult they both got chopped off.

Seriously, go get the straight facts on diamond smuggling. Its not a open and shut case, and its not all just people loosing limbs. Get the straight facts on it before you decide never to buy a diamond because of the civil unrest over in certain parts of Africa.

I don't buy diamonds because I'm cheap. Plus I don't have any use for them, I lost me arms in my last trip to Africa.

Havn't any of you seen the Dilbert(c) comic where Dogbert confronts a jewler and the jewler gives him a free bag of diamonds to keep the secret that there are actually tons of diamonds but the supply is restricted. Soon, diamonds will be sold in novelty gift shops with little smily faces painted on them

At least you got an address to send for the diamond. I got two or three follow up emails and then nothing. But I am sending in a SASE to the address on your post. I have an antique crystal salter with a lid that I picked up at an antique store. I have gotten quite a few free gemstones and deals on cut stones from the deals forums over the years and I keep them in the salter on top of my computer roll top. It seems to capture everyones attention who sees it. The old salters usually come with a tiny spoon that was used to sprinkle the salt on your food that is just right for picking up individual stones to admire!
