When was the last time your mom made an 8x10 enlargement of one of her friend's pics?

That's true, but high MP cameras are so cheap nowadays, its cheap insurance.

My way of thinking: if you're capturing a digital image, capture as much detail as you can. You may not need the extra detail now, but who knows about the future. You can store tens of thousands of digital images relatively cheaply. 10, 20, 30 years from now, if you want to crop, make a large print, etc, you always will have that extra resolution available.

Definitely get either the Canon Powershot A520, or the cheap Nikon, cant remember the name. I sell electronics on the weekends and these two are definitely the best in that price range. Theyre nothing spectacular but they got all the basics and they do a good job.

Canon A520 - got one a few weeks ago and it is a really solid camera. I don't know how to use 80% of the features but they are there for when I am ready.

I agree that they're solid cameras, but solid isn't probably what a high school trendy girl is looking for. Keep in mind that half these girls will get a friggen ipod as a fashion accessory. They need something that looks small and compact. Having one of these tiny cameras are often more of a fashion statement than for actual functionality.
A520s don't look too hot.

canon powershot series FTW - I had a A85 before I got my rebel and it was nice - full auto if you so desire, or you could switch to a bunch of manual stuff or anywhere in between. I could get very nice pics from it. They replaced the A85 with the A520 now, so I'd get that, or the A510 if you don't want 4MP.

In that case, Canon Powershot FTW.

True, but a 2/3MP digicam will give you little room for error regarding composition if you want to print 8x10.

OTOH, I can crop out good portions of a 6MP image and still make a 8x10.

I don't normally print 8x10's. The 8x10's I do print are shots from a series of the same scene or object. If you only have one shot of a specific thing, chances are it's not important enough to make an 8x10 out of, so composition won't be an issue.

That's you.. keep in mind this is your average high school teen girl that just takes snapshots with flash of their friends at random places. These pictures HAVE no composition. It has no aesthetic value. It's just a snapshot.
That said, I highly doubt she would make any 8x10 prints with it.

Nikon Coolpix 5600... I have the 4600 and it takes awesome shots (google for images posted by me - all are located at pics.bbzzdd.com (not sure I've made it a public directory or not).

I was eyeing the 5600 at Sears the other day... our local Sears is going out of business. If it's still there tomorrow, I'm going to grab it. Regularly around 200, it'll be 133 tomorrow.
