A GREAT C++ Book Recommendation?

Hi All,

I consider myself a good C and Java programmer, but in my 4 years of college, I've probably only worked with C++ in two or three projects. Can you suggest for me a GREAT book that will help me transition from C to C++? I'm looking for something that will teach me more than the basics, but written in a way that is easy to follow.

That's an awful book for learning C++. It's better as a reference than a teaching tool.

Deitel & Deitel is commonly used in C++ courses. http://www.prenhall.com/deitel/ has example chapters so you can see if you like the style.

IMO, C++ Primer Plus is the best intro book. If you follow that up with Stroustrup and Eckel (TIC as BBWF recommended) you'll be plenty competent.

It's an awful book for learning to program, but the OP says he's already an accomplished programmer, including an OO language. In those circumstances, I think Stroustrup is a great book to learn C++. But maybe that's just me ... I know several languages well, so hand-holding tutorial style books grate on me. A good reference is what I want.

Hm, that is a good point. C++ could probably be described as a "middle" between C and Java, so I think The C++ P.L. would be a good book to get a handle on it all, without having to waste time wading through hello world. (plus he's worked on *some* C++, so I'm sure he gets a lot of the basics already)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I took a look at some of the sample pages on Amazon of "The C++ P.L". It looks like the right book for my level. I'll definitely also take a look at some of the Deitel books and the "C++ Primer Plus" when I head to B&N's to see how they match up and if they cover any of the basics that I may not know too well.

That book isn't bad, but it gets hard to follow sometimes and the index/appendix is HORRID. It makes a PISS POOR reference book unless you've read it cover to cover and know where everything is. Aside from that, it spends too much time with needless comments on examples.

You can learn with the book, but you have to adapt to its style before you can, which sucks.
