Ok, some bad things have been happening at work and instead of wallowing it them, I decided to focus on something nice. I will post a story that I want to share. This post will be riddled with typos, bad grammar and spelling mistakes. There will be no cliffs so if you don?t want read something nice... click the back button.

I work part time for my vet. I am grossly overworked and underpaid, but I am not there for the money. After taxes, it is barely worth my even going and my b/f has often offered to pay me to stay home. I do two ppls job but do it willingly because of my boss.

ok, my vet is an Egyptian guy. he is short, overweight and has the worst skin I have ever seen. I also love him dearly and truly believe that God has a special place in heaven just for him. he has been a vet for 29 years and is one of the few that is not in it for the money. we are like family... in fact I like and respect him more than many ppl in my family. One day, many years ago, I was teasing him and asked how he got to be a vet. ?Egyptians are into oil, textile and etc., they are not vets!! How did you ever get to be a vet", I asked. He told me that when he was little his family was really poor. His family had a little farm and every time an animal got hurt or sick, they put the animal down because they did not have money to pay to treat them. He said that he remembered many times, as a little boy, that he would sit in a corner and cry and cry and cry because he wanted there to be another way... so he grew up, became a vet to MAKE another way. He charges a LOT less than any very in the area and if he knows that ppl really do not have money... he gives them huge discounts. His office is sparse but clean and he adores animals. After I worked for him for a few days, I learned why he has such bad skin. When the animals go into his office, he will actually get face level with them and withut blinking an eye tells them he loves them and is glad to see them... while they lick his entire face.... And such is my vet.

Ok... now to the nice story...

A client came in with a gravely ill dog. They had been to three different vets and all of them told this couple that their dog was not worth saving. it was not an old dog, only 3yrs old, but had a weird illness that I do not know as I am the office person mostly and not a vet. So, they brought the dog into my vet as a last resort. My vet confirmed the illness but did not tell them he would not treat the dog...instead he said that it would be incredibly expensive with a slim chance of recovery. He told them to go home and think about it. Two days later, this couple sent their grown son to the vet with the dog. The son told the vet that his parents decided to put the dog down, but did not have it in them to take the dog in themselves.

So, my vet took the dog and left it in the cage for the day. when the night time came, he decided to bring the dog upstairs into his home (he lives upstairs from the office so he can be on call 24/7) for the dog's last night. it was Saturday and the pet memorial cremation ppl did not work on Sunday's so he decided that he did not want to put the dog down and keep it in the freezer until Monday. During the weekend the vet got kinda attached to the dog. he saw something in the dog?s eyes, he said.

Now, anyone who has had the heartbreaking task of putting an old dog down will know that there is a look in the dog?s eyes that says they are ready to go and know it is time. This dog did not have that look, but had a spark of life in him. but the dog was still suffering from a serious illness. the vet did not believe in a miracle, but he decided to give it a go. he kept the dog up in his home for a week while treating him and the dog showed signs of improvement. The dog was upstairs with him at night and downstairs during the day for treatment. And the end of the week, the couple called looking for the dogs ashes. The vet lied to them and told them that they had not come in yet. He did not want to raise their hopes because he was still not sure if the dog would pull thru. The next week goes by and the dog improves even more. The couple called two more times and again he made up an excuse why the ashes had not come in. By the end of the third week, the vet really started to think that the dog would be ok so he called the son and asked him to come into the office after closing. When the son arrived, he confessed to treating the dog for the past three weeks and thought the dog would be ok. The son was blown away and agreed to keep the secret for another week or so. It took five weeks. four of those weeks, the couple was looking for the ashes.

Finally at the end of it, the vet called the couple and told them they could come and get their dog. they thought they were coming to get the ashes...she was actually coming to get her dog!!!

they are not rich, and could never afford to pay the vets bills for five weeks of boarded treatment. So, the vet charged them for the money he laid out in medicine only. no boarding, no food, none of his time. Just the medicine.

the woman made new curtains for the office. She swept, mopped and waxed the floor in the waiting room. The man came in and painted the office. He tightened all the screws on all the doorknobs in all the rooms in the office and surgery. Did the vet want them to do these things? No! did he need them to do these things? No. But he understood THEIR need to do these things.

And such is my vet.

If you?ve read this far? Thanks? I feel better now.

It is true. 100% hand on heart swear to God true.

and no, i do not work for free. I started with no medical or vet experience for $9.00 an hour and have never asked for a raise. I claim single, one dependent... so 25 hours of work bring me home $183.

edit: but as i said above... i am not there for the money. the first week i worked for him, i did for free because i think so highly of him and he gives me nice discounts for my cats. when it became regular, he insisted on paying me and he offered me $9.00 an hour to start. i never asked for a raise... but am not there for the money. i have two other part time jobs, a house to run and a bunch of cats to care for.

the dog is cured, and home with the couple. the couple thought they were bringing the dog in to be put down, but the vet secretely treated the dog. and when he told the couple to come for the dog, they thought they were coming for the ashes. they were surprised... to tears... to get the dog and not the ashes.

i do not know what the illness was.. i do office work and occasionally assist in surgery... nueutering, spaying and dental. i dont know much about any other illness or etc.

This is the way things should happen. They showed their gratitude rather than taking advantage of his kindness. He will now probably get a lot of referrals from them.

he was almost embarrassed to have them come in and clean and paint and wax and make curtains... but he understood their NEED to do these things to say thank you to him.

oh I got that part...

but I was just wondering what was wrong in the first place, and if they'd have to continue treating it..

You confused me because you said you were unpaid.

did i? In the story above?

if i did, i mistyped what i meant. i worked for the first week... last year for free. after that he insisted on paying me and i make what i stated...i will go and look for my saying i was unpaid and edit it... because it is untrue. i am not unpaid.

sorry.

Great story. We just had to take our beloved Ukrainian cat, Miss Kitty, to the vet yesterday. We have an elderly vet and very good. Also loves animals and keeps his billings reasonable. Miss Kitty went out yesterday morning while I went to a group breakfast. She was just fine. When I got home and parked, she came around the garage with therr legs working and one rear dragging. She had apparently been caught in something or tangled with an animal. Her knee was without flesh and the bone was broken just below the joint. The vet said he would do his best and that there is a surgeon in Birmingham that will pin the knee if the setting and imolilization doesn't show signs of working. We left Miss Kitty overnight with the vet. During the night, she shed the splint device and seperated the repair. He fixed it again today. We brought her home and are watching her 7/24 in an effort to keep her still. She hates this, but is a good Kitty. Wish us luck. Would have her in the surgery, but takes a week to get her in and we may as well see if this works. Love Miss Kitty!

Aw, that almost brought a tear to my eye. to you and your vet, rock on, the world could use more people like you.

EDIT: And that story was far from long and boring, it was heartwarming.

That is the nicest story I have read in a long time!

If the vet drinks, I'll pay for a bottle!

Thanks KarenMarie :wine:

We need more caring people like this in the world. People who do work for the joy of work and helping others, not for money.
