A new heatsink in town

The sink in particular is the Thermo-Engine v60-4210, a PCM(phase change material)-powered sink.
It was impressive against the likes of the 6035, hedgehog, 742, and the FOPs.
Not a bad roundup, for a motherboard-based review. I'd like to see this and
the MC462 on 2cooltek's peltier testbed. I don't know who would win!

Looks good but you have to use that delta fan to get the kick a$$ performance and its a little to much noise for me....... I think the fan makers need to work on the fans to make them blow more air with less noise that would be cool.

It's not just the fan. It's the combination of the fan and the heatsink that produces the magnitude
of the noise, due to the turbulence of the air flowing through the fins on the sink. There's a subjective rating of the noise in the review. Some sinks got a bit louder with a Delta, like the Thermo-Engine, and others like the Taisol and FOP, just started screaming. The pitch is primarily RPM-dependant. That's the part about the Delta that I don't like so much, you can pretty much hear its 7k whine over anything.

I dunno, yeah they may be innaccurate but they do give an idea of perforamce comparisions. I mean, i went by an inaccurate test when i decided to upgrade from a fop32 to a hedgehog and i was able to clock my cpu up much higher with the hedgehog. Bu ti dunno, these guys prolly got paid off to say that heatsink was the best heheh.

That's the problem, its only a general idea based an unpredictably inaccurate testing method.

Just looke at the orbs and their higher rates of compression versus other heatsinks. Or how in one test teh ALpha beats the FOp and in the very next one the FOP beats the Alpha. it simply isn't consistent enough, reliable enough, nor relative enough to do any kind of quality comparison with.

Now I really want to see this on a peltier testbed. Now that I see the fin construction,
I'm wondering if it doesn't get some extra degrees of cooling just by being able to blow on the ceramic.
That might be a good thing, I don't know. And any ideas why the black ones performs better
than the non-anodized one?

Cause anodized H/S are cooler, though i cant say why.

Sanyo Denki makes excellent quality fans that spec better than a lot of the fans out there and are generally more quiet. They're just so hard to come by.

What mroe proof do you need that Kyle should not do heatsink reviews than the following facts:

Much to my chagrin, we lapped our little asses off with some 400 grit sandpaper and got no better temp reading. It actually surprised me. You can see from comparing the pictures, that the surface of the heatsink was much smoother when we finished. That means that the heatsink is pulling the heat off the CPU, but just could not dump anymore of it to the air via the stock fan.

its because the temp readings are compressed, as I've tried to tell you time and time again. Your 2-3C core temp drop isn't picked up by the socket-thermistor

And then his super-orb temps go up 2F, and the Vantec temps go up 1F. If he indeed kept his room temps stable, and the testing method actually reliable this would not have happened. Or else every heatsink temp wpould have increased 2F.

Regarding the heatsink test, I think along practical lines. How much more CPU speed is achieved in the end, and for how much extra money? If they really want to show meaningful test results, they should show us the maximum stable overclocking of an individual CPU using the various heatsinks. Isn't that the final measure of effectiveness for most of us?

I bought an Alpha6035 and called it done, it is versatile and forward-compatible at least to the end of my A7V's life cycle, and hopefully beyond.

That would be very useful.. Especially considering the number of tests that various places have done where it took mounting after mounting of super and chrome orbs before it could finish the designated test.

Personally I like the design of that Thermo Engine.
I think if you wrapped the heatsink around so all the air would reach the bottom hot area of the heatsink you'd probably get it a bit cooler, especially with the low flow fan.

And unfortunately, that also helps to cool MB pcb, which, against popular belief, actually does radiate heat... and probably helps lower socket-thermistor readings.

I've tested some so far, haven't gotten to the hedgehog yet(and neither have I tried hte new swiftech), but a PAL6035 rev2 with the new clip is very nice. Should have a PEP66 rev2 shortly, too.

If you don't mind the noise, the FOP38 slightly outperforms the PAL6035 w/Delta.
