What do you mean "unless"?
The speed would still be greater than or equal to C, and less than 2c.
If the cat started at 80 times the speed of sound, it wouldn't slow down to below twice the speed of sound, now would it?
Well, I belive the initial post said "Now each time the cat hear *clang* it doubles its speed." which should have given you a hint that it hears a *clang* noise at least once. Thus, initial speed < speed of sound < 80*speed of sound.
