A7V Cooling Problems

Recently i purchased a good amount of hardware to build a computer for college. This hardware included an athlon 1 gig t-bird, Assus A7V MB. 256 megs of 133, Assus Video card, SB Live, CD Burner and DVD and a Golden Orb fan to cool my CPU. Now that everything is up and running, when i look at my asus probe program and my bios it registers my CPU temp at 150 F!!! Thats seems to be alot considering friends of mine with the same chip and fan (not same MB) usually get around MAX 120 F. Is there somthing wrong here? Any help is appreciated.

Yes, there is something wrong. It could be the temperature reading. 150F is pretty hot. Have you tried touching the HSF to see if it was how? Also, where is the termistor located? Ifs its between the die and the HSf, that could explain it. If this is the case, move it. Also, make sure that there is adequate circulation in the case. If the inside of the case is hot, the HSF won't do anything because there will be no place to dissipate the heat.

Either it is the heatsink not attached correctly, or its the bios.

heatsink :
golden orb is NOT good for socket A processors ! it can damage them beyond repair easily ! use a chrome orb ...
Use thermal grease, but only very little. Its purpose is filling the microscopic gaps between the cpu and the metal of the heatsink. Applying too much will cause the cpu and the heatsing not to have contact - the grease is insulating them. The grease is conducting heat better than air, but extremely much worse than the direct contact of CPU and heatsink. Use _very_ litte, a small drop in the middle of the cpu die. the pressure will spread it.

bios :

look at members.tripod.de/Juggernaut/

for details. 1004 is running hotter than 1003.

Try a Taisol heatsink/fan (AMD approved up to 1.1Ghz) about $12,then stick in two 80mm Sunon case fans & watch how low your Temperature will be (I could not believe the drop in Temperature)to give you a idea mine is at 38C(100F) for CPU Temp, with a 900mhz Thunderbird & usiing no special thermal paste(just the free stuff that comes with the heatsink).

I've got one of them big round heatsink thingies on my amd 900, but its still reporting about 55c/131f which seem quite hot, plus the 4 fans in my system which sould be circulating and exhausting air, suggestions here would be appreciated, although that is provided the a7v is reporting the temp correctly with it's onboard thermisters, and I am using 1004 bios revision, which seems to up temp any way.

loweyson,

That big round thingy sounds like a Thermaltake Golden ORB which is not the best for a 900 BIRD. The newer Chrome Model is an improvement but I pimp TAISOL CEK733092. Cheap at $11 and very effective.

Nice one, that sounds familiar although It's not the golden one (thats for FCPGA, isn't it?) it's chrome or silver, or whatever you wanna call it. Altough I'm looking at the footprint of it now and it's a round base which covers all surface mounted the chips but doesn't quite extend to the edges and completely cover the black round rubber things in each corner. Not sure but would this cause the problems with heat, on another note, this heatsink has brought the temp down from around mid 60's to 55c which is much better than a big flat based square one that they give you as standard.

I also have a feeling that the temperature is causing system hangs, and is what is effecting the readings given by asus probe, the readings in bios fluctuate far less, and this would tie up because in bios the cpu will cool to around 50, while in windows the load is heavier and the temp is therefore higher ????????
