Ok, yesterday my previously stable Athlon system decided to die in a very strange way. I have an Asus A7V w/ a T-Bird 900, 512 MB Micron RAM, 450 watt AMD-approved Antec power supply, &c.
So yesteday I went to power down the system, and it wouldn't turn off with the soft power button. Thinking the case button had lost contact with the physical switch, I removed the front bezel of my case and pushed the switch: nothing. Nothing looked amiss inside the case either, and the switch hadn't come detached from the mobo.
I unplugged the system, plugged it back in, and lo, it wouldn't turn back on. What's more, the board didn't power on for a second when I plugged it in like it usually does. I was suspicious of my power supply, but it didn't work with a 250 watt AMD-approved supply either.
I removed the mobo, dusted out my entire case, checked for shorts, put it back in and made sure everything was cool. fine. Wouldn't post, wouldn't even power on. The fans don't even start.
I'm thinking it's a problem with the power-on/off circuitry, but I don't know how that could go wrong with the system on and the case closed. Overheating has never been a problem with the system. Is there something I'm overlooking? Should I start shopping for a new board?
