Can anyone help me? I just unstalled an A7V133 and it doesn't recognize ATA100. I have a Quantum Fireball 20g 7200 rpm which is definitely ATA 100 and I have the right cable on it. The motherboard acts as if it is not compliant. What am I doing wrong. It won't let me enable in bios.

Thanks

are you plugging it into the promise ide ports, or the via ones?

if its on the promise it wont show up in bios. but it will still be recognized if you have the promise set to ata100 not raid, and if in bios you have the onboard promise set to auto load bios.

The problem here is that the primary bios is laoded first, doesn't dectect your drive because the Ultra 100 controllers bios is loaded AFTER the primary bios.

This causes issues installing win2k, or linux.

Throw your HD to your Onboard via dealie.
Your going to lose 2% HD performance MAX.

HD's can't utilize ATA66 (only ata33, or a little over) let alone ATA100!

Thanks for the quick response guys, but I'm kinda lost still. I'm not plugged into the Raid dontrollers. I don't have to be do I?

I'm running win98se so no 2000 problems. The bios is loading first then it searches for ATA100 and doesn't find any.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

If it is not plugged in the promise controller, then it wont' be "shown" in the promise screen.
Just put the device type to "auto" in the ide detection screen.

Bglad,
I had the same problem w/ my Maxtor 30g/ATA 100. Here's what I did:
1. Connect your hard drive to your Primary IDE controller (non-ata/100).
2. Run fdisk and format. Install win98se.
3. Install your updated promise controller then shutdown.
4. Now, move your hard drive to your ata-100 ide slot.
5. On your bios, go to boot section and disable ide, scroll down and change boot to ata100/scsi.
6. Save and reboot.
7. It will load your primary bios then your promise ata 100 bios.
I hope this helps.

make sure you use the 80-wire flat cable; set the hard disk to master (with the jumpers located next to the ide connector); enable 'load ata100 bios' in the bios settings;

however when installing win2k for example you should have a driver disk for the promise controller at hand; you can make this on another computer probably.
otherwise you have to install windows with the hd connected to the standard ide controller. then, after installing windows you can install the newest promise drivers (available from asus) and then afterwards switch the hard disk to the promise controller.

btw, it's a lot of crap that you wouldn't notice the speed difference from ata66/100. you sure do, because the communication with the hard disk cache takes advantage of the extra speed, although the raw speed of the drive is probably around 30meg/s.

Ok, but I thoought any of the spiggots would do ATA100. In fact, it is pretty clear that this is the case in the manual. I thought the Promise controller just added Raid. Is this an error in the manual?

OK OK!!!!!
Here is the deal. I ordered this board from Newegg and it came without a manual. I've been looking at the manual online which says you can use any of the four IDE taps for ATA100 and the Promise controller is just for Raid..

I made Newegg overnight me a manual and in the written manual it says you have to use the Promise controller for ATA100. Hard copy manual must be correct.

Thanks you guys.

by default the promise controller is set as ata100 controller; however there is a jumper with which you can change the controller to raid. perhaps you should check the online manual for which jumper that is and then check if it's accidentally set to raid.

and make sure you have set load ata bios in the bios settings.
