Abit IP35-E POST problem

Hi guys, need help

Just bought new IP35-E, Pentium Dual Core 2180, Patriot Signature Line Memory (psd22g800kh) 2 x 1GB, 8800GT, WD3200WS SATA HD.

Put it all together with my old Enermax EG465P-VE

It powers on, all the fans run, but nothing on the screen.

I tried unplugged and replugged the cpu, ram and vid card.

I checked some of the forums and found out there is a POST problem with selected RAM, the reason being some "overclocking" RAM needs higher Voltage than the default 1.8V. I checked the Patriot web site and my sticks of RAM only needs 1.8V.

I also did the clearning CMOS and booting with 1 RAM trick, but still no help.

I already unplugged all HD, DVDrom, and USB, leaving only cpu, memory and vid card plugged.

I checked the PSU and on the +12V rail, it outputs 20A. Is this the reason? not enough power to POST? My PSU is also only ATX12V 1.3 meaning that it only has 20-pin for the mother board connector, and 4-pin instead of 8-pin on the "secondary" mobo connector.

I don't have another computer/vid card/memory to swap and try. I maybe able to borrow a Antac ATX12V 2.0 PSU but with lower output at 400W.

I read somewhere that I will need 22-24A on the 12V rail to run the 8800GT.

Please kindly advise!

DO NOT SKIP ANY STEP. Strip the board bare. Install CPU, GPU, mouse, keyboard, and one stick of RAM. Remove battery. Clear CMOS and let sit for 1/2 hour. Replace battery and CMOS jumper. Connect the 20 and 4 pin plugs to MB. Connect supplemental power cable to GPU. Connect molex plug to the MB (just above PCI-E 16x slot). Connect PSU to the wall. Short the two power pins on the MB to boot. If you cannot POST, then try other stick of RAM or 1.8V DDR 667/800 RAM from Crucial or Kingston.

Also try to boot with another PCI or PCI-E 16x GPU.

I did all that already, and let the CMOS clear sit for overnight (fell asleep), still no POST screen on monitor.

The power supply was also changed to a 550W PSU with sufficient current on the +12V rails to ensure it wasn't the PSU problem

I also tried using a PCI video card (found a very old S3 Trio 64 PCI vid card). Same problem with no POST screen.

I guess I gonna have to take the RAM back and swap to Kingston.

Another thing I tried was to remove all RAM with only CPU and vid card connected.

I was expecting the computer to give me a long beep or a double beep to indicate no RAM.

However it did not beep and still the same nothing on the screen to see, monitor orange light.

Is this normal to have no warning beeps from the motherboard when I don't have RAM installed?

If you've tested with the bare board outside the case, then we're down to RAM, PSU, or MB. DO NOT connect any optical drive or HDD. Give 1.8V DDR2 RAM a try.

FIXED!

I took the mobo, the cpu and the ram back to the shop and they tested it for me. It turns out the mobo was screwed and they swapped a new one and all was well.

Installing WinXP as I type this.

rhizaowns: if you already RMA'd it once, and tried different PSUs and GPUs, I think your problem is really the RAM. It's rare for CPUs to have a problem, and it's next to impossible to have a CPU not compatible with the mobo.

My advise is to swap the RAM, or better still, if you got the RAM, mobo together at the same shop, just take both in and ask them to test, and try swap another RAM and test again.

Use 1.8V DDR2 667 or 800 RAMs from Crucial or Kingston for best compatibility.

It's very rare to see two consecutive bad boards.

I can say from experience that the IP35-E is not compatable with OCZ Gold Series DDR2-667 memory even though it is rated for 1.8V.

I originally got this memory to use in a 965P-DS3 (rev1) board and it wouldn't boot there either, had to get generic DDR2 (Kingston) to flash BIOS before it would even recognize that the OCZ was installed.
The OCZ works well in an ASRock ConRoe1333-D667 board but I couldn't get any overclock with that board at all.
Bought an IP35-E and it refused to boot with the OCZ memory. Dropped in 4x1GB of the cheap HP DDR2-667 and it fired right up, set FSB to 350 and I'm happily running 2.8GHz with 3.25GB ram in XP (temps 55-57C on stock cooling with F@H running prevent me from moving to 3GHz).

If I had known how "selective" this memory would be I wouln't have purchased it. Anyone know if OCZ is picky in general or did I just get unlucky?

OCZ stinks. I only buy quality 1.8V DDR2 667 or 800 RAMs from Crucial or Kingston (N5 only). These guys have very deep R&D. Their JEDEC DDR2 modules should run and overclock well with many boards. Kingston's N5s don't come with rebates, but one should pay more for quality RAMs.

check your monitor cable. Seriously.

I wasted baout 2 hours with a similar problem, including a trip to best buy to get an ultra cheap pci-e vid card until i realized what it was. The dvi cable was slightly loose on the monitor (not card) causing no display. Never before have i been so happy and mad at the same time
