Hrm. No idea about the answer to any of the questions, but I did have half a drink of this stuff over the weekend at a tailgate party, and holy crap did it pack a punch. It was mixed and iced, but it still almost knocked me over, and my typical fare at those tailgates is a warm 1.5L bottle of Jameson straight. Tasty though.

absinthe drinkers, did you have any kind of psychedellic feeling, and didn't get just smashed since it has such a high alcohol content?

I haven't drank a lot at one sitting, but it certainly gives a different feeling than being drunk. I felt kindof light and giddy/happy.

also, what shows up in the random drug screenings?

Shouldn't be a concern. AFAIK there is no such thing as a test for any of the metabolites of wormwood.

You are correct. People are not talking about selling it in the States.

May I assume that you're the type of drunk that becomes suicidal when under the influence? If light, giddy, and happy don't describe drunkenness I don't know what does.

there really is no place to 'get the stuff on the cheap' since we're in a country where its illegal to sell/import into. even then, I am not sure its even cheap in countries where its legal. its more of an expensive drink no matter what. Could try a bar in a european country where its legal, and then you can taste it.

No, I generally not an unhappy drunk. I'm a good-natured and horny drunk.

This "light, giddy, and happy" were very different than any other drunk feelings I've had.

Wormwood is a plant. It is not in the same family as cannabis, it is not even in the same order. What you guys are thinking of is probably the thujone, which is found in wormwood. It does not act on cannabinoid receptors like THC. Absinth has a very small amount of thujone, and the fact that it ever caused hallucinations is alleged, not proven. Thujone is also found in sage. Does sage cause you to hallucinate?

Not Salvia officinalis, common sage (the herb), which is what I am talking about. You're thinking of salvia divinorum, of which the psychoactive chemical is salvinorin, not thujone.

yeah it's gonna cost you ~$20 just try a little (20mL). though that's still cheaper than traveling to europe.

Yeah because a plane ticket to Europe is cheaper. Like all other liquors I'm sure there are reasonably priced bottles of absinthe that are not bottom of the barrel booze.

Yeah. It's still pretty much the most expensive drink in the places where it's legal, especially on a per volume basis. When you can get good beer for like 1.50-3 Euro/L, good wine for 5-7 Euro/L, or decent rum/whiskey/vodka for 8-12 Euro/L, the bottle of Absinth that's 25 Euro for .75L doesn't make a whole lot of sense

Wow, how did I miss THIS thread!!??

OK...

Where to buy absinthe if you live in the states:

Try this place. I've ordered from them probably 50 times now (I run through a few bottles a month) and have never, never, never had any snags or issues with delivery or customs. In fact, their shipping is so quick that you'd never know they were overseas. As an example, I ordered 2 bottles on the 23rd and they were at my doorstep the morning of the 26th... and I live in Alaska. They don't carry the ultra-premiums like Un Emile 68 or Logan Fils, but what they do sell is still ranked among the best in the world, and is rumored to be the same recipe that van Gogh was fond of.

Does it make you hallucinate?

Personally... I don't get any. I usually feel pretty drunk before I've had enough to make me see things. however, I can tell you this... getting drunk on absinthe will F^CK YOU UP! It packs a lot of punch. But getting buzzed on it, is the best thing in the world. As was said earlier, it's the "giddy" kind of drunk.

Is it illegal in the US?

yes and no. It is illegal to sell absinthe within the US but it's not illegal to simply possess it. IMPORTING it tends to be a mushy area; some claim it's illegal while others provide equal evidence that it's not. In any case, ordering it from overseas is never an issue in my experience.

Is it worth it / Should I try it?

YES!!!!!!!!!

...and because anyone who gets a bottle for the first time will ask... here's the answer:

Proper preparation involves 1 part absinthe, 3-5 parts water, and 1 sugar cube. The tradition holds that the absinthe is poured into a glass; a slotted spoon is layered across the rim with a sugar cube sitting on it; and then cold water is dripped over the sugar cube, causing sugar water to run down into the absinthe glass. 3-5 parts water is based on personal taste. Some like it strong with 3 parts water; others like it more mellow with 5 parts water. Some even prefer 2 sugar cubes, however one does the trick. IT IS NORMAL FOR THE ABSINTHE TO TURN MILKY WHITE. In fact, this is called "louching" and is one of the qualities absinthes are rated on.

i never really suggested going there, just saying if ever over there its what one should try.
but yea, its going to be expensive to try as the shipping charge doesn't change.

Anything you order from a european country with 3~5 day shipping will be at least $25 and I have no problem paying that b/c that's the real cost if they send it via fedex or dhl or whatnot. I just dont wanna spend the cash to ship a bottle of crap here to the USA.

Their main flagship flavors are the La Fee Parisian and La Fee Bohemian. For a long time those were the only two flavors offered on the site; lately they've expanded significantly and I haven't even come close to trying half of them yet.

I would recommend the La Fee Parisian, as it is one of the few remaining "authentic" recipes around. It's also the closest to the generic perception of absinthe that the public holds, in color and in taste. Absinthes come in all colors nowadays, and some don't even have anise flavor which is generally a staple of any absinthe.

If you find you like the Parisian, you'll love branching out and trying other flavors. But, generally... absinthe is an acquired taste and if you don't really like one... it's quite possible you won't like any of the others.
