When I was in China I had some that was from the Ukraine. It was pretty good, had about 4 1/2 - 5 shots. The bartender told me one time he had 12 and he was paraylized on the floor staring at the cieling for a whole night.

Wow, how did I miss THIS thread!!??

OK...

Where to buy absinthe if you live in the states:

Try this place. I've ordered from them probably 50 times now (I run through a few bottles a month) and have never, never, never had any snags or issues with delivery or customs...........

please recommend a brand or two

Their main flagship flavors are the La Fee Parisian and La Fee Bohemian. For a long time those were the only two flavors offered on the site; lately they've expanded significantly and I haven't even come close to trying half of them yet.

I would recommend the La Fee Parisian, as it is one of the few remaining "authentic" recipes around. It's also the closest to the generic perception of absinthe that the public holds, in color and in taste. Absinthes come in all colors nowadays, and some don't even have anise flavor which is generally a staple of any absinthe.

If you find you like the Parisian, you'll love branching out and trying other flavors. But, generally... absinthe is an acquired taste and if you don't really like one... it's quite possible you won't like any of the others.

I can order 2 700ml bottles (Parisian 68% and Bohemian 70%) for about $100 USD shipped from eabsinthe, but do you really think it's worth it for two bottles of booze? If the quality is right I have no problem spending the money, but I hate to waste money. I don't think the taste will be a problem as I have done my fair share of experimentation in the past.

I am old enough to know that every kind of booze is an aquired taste, but young enough to enjoy the effects of a good bottle of absinthe if it is 1/8 of what the rumors claim to be. I would also like to enjoy it for the fiurst time with my close friends and do not want them do be disappointed.

You certainly sound like you know what your talking about and this seems like a pretty good deal, but for the benefit of the OP and others following this thread (and the fact that the 15th is payday) I think I will wait until the end of the week to order. If anybody else has suggestions, coments, or experinces please chime in.

I would trust the opinions of giantpinkbunnyhead and CollectiveUnconcious. While I've never personally had some of the brands giantpinkbunnyhead seems to like, I can see that his favorite site sells some great stuff. CollectiveUnconcious also seems to be one of the few who actually grips the purpose and experience, so take his posts more seriously than, say, the dude who says it "sends you loopy."

I've always wanted to try this stuff, but have one concern, that has already been mentioned but not addressed in this thread -- does this show up on a drug screen test?

It was addressed. No, it does not. You'd be surprised at what isn't tested for on a standard piss test, anyway. Your average NIDA5 test doesn't look for MDMA, shrooms, nor LSD, among other things. Absinthe is far from a concern on any drug test you will ever encounter.

Are you sure you priced those bottles right? I thought that those two bottles were on sale for 55 pounds; that's about $100 right there and that's without shipping. They usually charge me 25 pounds to ship two bottles, which would raise the total to about $145 delivered. Assuming you live in the states anyway. Are they offering a shipping special?

But regardless... personally, I absolutely think it's worth it, but again I really enjoy the stuff. Now you mentioned a concern about it being as good as the rumors make it out to be... right there, is a potential issue. I'm sure you've heard that absinthe causes hallucinations because of the wormwood (thujon) it contains. Now... I personally think this is greatly exaggerated and not a typical experience of the casual absinthe drinker. If you are hoping to see if it makes you hallucinate, you probably will be disappointed. I suppose if one drank enough of it, it's possible... just, not in my experience. On the other hand... it is indeed a very different, very unusual drink. I can only think of one type of liquor available in the states that's remotely similar, and that is your basic bottle of Pernod.

If you have any hesitations about ordering, there are smaller bottles available via gift sets on that website. They're not as cost effective obviously, but they're useful if you want to try a small amount before splurging on a bottle. I believe a small gift bottle can be shipped stateside for a total price of around $30-35, that includes the bottle and a slotted spoon. It's only a 50cl bottle which will be good for about 3 drinks.

Hope that helps.

QFT! Make sure the bottles you buy have wormwood in them. Without the wormwood it's nothing special.

Wormwood is poisonous and hallucinogenic. Also, it causes spontaneous abortions in pregnant women.

Stay far, far away from any of the Czech Absinthe. It is the strongest, and has the highest thujone levels, but it is the most rotten tasting liquid on earth.

As others have said it gives you a different buzz than other alcohols. I wouldn't compare it to pot or any other hallucinogens, but it doesn't feel like a standard booze buzz either. It is a sort of charged, and energetic drunk for me. I stay coherent and lucid while feeling heavily intoxicated, as opposed to when I get heavily intoxicated off non-Absinthe booze where I stumble around like the village drunk.

giantpinkbunnyhead - How about some of the Swiss blues that seem to be lower on the anise?

I have been looking at these in particular as I am not big on the anise.

Also has anyone ordered from Alandia? Reputable?

It was mixed and iced, but it still almost knocked me over, and my typical fare at those tailgates is a warm 1.5L bottle of Jameson straight. Tasty though.

Absinthe isn't tasty. It's bitter. And the thujone is toxic, with permanent effect.

and get busted by customs? That's the whole point of buying the absinthe... if the courier gets busted it's his ass and not yours.

So does it taste something like pernod? Pernod to me tastes licorice flavored, is that what absinthe tastes like? I have to try some if that is the case

No and no. Pure wormwood oil is poisonous, but wormwood itself is used for therapeutic reasons. The claim that absinthe can cause hallucinations (due to the thujone in wormwood) is unfounded, as there is no evidence to support this.

A bit like marijuana, since Wormwood is in the same family as THC.

this is not the case at all...

For many years thujone was thought to act on the cannabinoid receptors similar to THC based on studies that only looked at the molecules shape. [1] This is known to be false today and studies show thujone does not bind to these receptors.
