Anybody here ever tried it? What did you think and how did it affect you.

I'm about 2 drinks in and I can definitely tell that it is going to be something different than the "usual" drunk. Very clean and airy so far. Will post back after a few more - see where it's going to go.

There's nothing special about Absinthe, it's just a really hard liquor that doesn't taste very good. All of the stories about psychoactive properties are just tales, there's nothing to it.

Yeah , I have heard that since the original factory burned in the late 1800's - early 1900's the recipe has never been the same. The original factory was rebuilt in 1905(before being shut down because of the ban)and used updated machinery in the processing but it was not the same. Kind of a shame. It is no longer illegal here as we just bought a bottle her - although it was a little spendy. Me and my SO were looking at purchasing a "pre-ban" bottle but the cost is insane!

Absinthe is has a high alcohol content, nothing more. Its effects are exaggerated and is far inferior in potency to moonshine or everclear (95%).

The bottle we have is 62%. I guess that the originals were around 70%. Good link Zane. I wondered if the Thujone had been filtered out as it is also considered a poison and used to be considered the active ingredients in Absinthe. I saw a study on 13 bottles of "pre-ban" that stated that there wasn't enough Thujone in a bottle to have a detrimental effect on you and the alcohol content was the main effect giving ingredient.

I've drank a few different kinds of absinthe. I never really felt anything beyond the buzz of the booze.

I liked a few different mixed drinks I found that included it. One strange thing is that while scotch makes my nose red, absinthe makes my cheeks red.

This night last year was the last time I drank it. I got horrible food poisoning (ended up in the hospital) that night and all my puke tasted like it. I can't even smell it now without feeling ill.

Sorry to hear tat Source... The bottle we have is the same one showing in the first link provided by Zane - obviously a commercialized brand - Lucid. It does seem to have a little different effect so far. At least for me. I'd really like to try a "pre-ban" for comparative purposes of course.

In the US, absinthe remains illegal to produce or sell. However, Absinthe is legal to own or purchase by the public and many US citizens do so from stores located outside the USA.

As has been noted, most 'absinthe' you see in the States is just cashing in on the name. If you have friends or family that serve in Europe, see if you can get them to bring you a real bottle. The real French and Netherlands absinthes are the best I've tried, and they are available in many places in Europe.

wrong, real absinthe contains wormwood, which is a hallucinogen/psychadelic..

If anyone (other than Heller) knows about drugs (illegal or not) ... its ZJ. He's probably tried everything from antifreeze to the z-drugs.

Thats strange, cause you don't seem to know jack about absinthe. It is nothing other than a slightly different spirit than most americans are used to. You do not trip from it, even the real stuff from europe. I've had about 3 different kinds myself, and there is no hallucinagenic effect. Mansinthe, Suisse Verte, and another I can't remember. Hell, between me and my buddy we drank 2/3 of the bottle of Suisse in one night and were nothing other than drunk.

It is a different drunk feeling however. You're a little clearer in the head, more aware - yet still definitely drunk.

Drinking absinthe just made me want to go get some shrooms again. Now THOSE, are hallucinagenic

it's classified as a hallucinogen.. you dont "trip" like on mushrooms, or LSD, but your thinking/perception is definetely altered.. it seems it gets really crazy if you use it regularly, like builds up in your system and you really wig out...

also it says that the ban on thujone (wormwod) was lifted in the US, but that they can only dose it at 10mg/kg... not enough to trip good...
Perhaps you want to read the links you post, retard.

Absinthe has been frequently and incorrectly described in modern times as being hallucinogenic. In the 1970s, a scientific paper mistakenly reported thujone was related to THC, the active chemical in cannabis.[60] Ten years after his 19th century experiments with wormwood oil, Valentin Magnan studied 250 cases of alcoholism and claimed that those who drank absinthe were worse off than those drinking ordinary alcohol, and that they experienced rapid-onset hallucinations.[61] Such accounts by absinthe opponents were embraced by its most famous users, many of whom were bohemian artists or writers.[62]
Two famous painters who helped popularize the notion that absinthe had powerful psychoactive properties were Toulouse Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh. In one of the best known accounts of absinthe drinking, Oscar Wilde described the feeling of having tulips on his legs after leaving a bar.[63] Today it is known that absinthe does not cause hallucinations.[64] Thujone, the active chemical in absinthe, is a GABA antagonist; and while it can produce muscle spasms in large doses, there is not enough evidence that it causes hallucinations.[64] It has been speculated that reports of hallucinogenic effects of absinthe may have been due to poisonous chemicals being added to cheaper versions of the drink in the 19th century, to give it a more vivid colour.[65]
However, the debate over whether absinthe produces effects on the human mind additional to those of alcohol has not been conclusively resolved. The effects of absinthe have been described by some as mind opening.[64] The most commonly reported experience is a "clear-headed" feeling of inebriation—a form of "lucid drunkenness". Chemist, historian and absinthe distiller Ted Breaux has claimed that the alleged secondary effects of absinthe may be caused by the fact that some of the herbal compounds in the drink act as stimulants, while others act as sedatives, creating an overall lucid effect of awakening.[66] Long term effects of low absinthe consumption in humans remain unknown, although the herbs in absinthe have both painkilling[67] and antiparasitic[68] properties.

Conclusion: Those who actually study it objectively find no conclusive effect beyond getting drunk off your ass. Those who rely on subjective anecdote believe there is an effect.

ZJ, the plural of 'anecdote' is not data. Look at the actual evidence. I don't care how many stupid forum users think the stuff is hallucinogenic. You can stack cow pats as high as you like, at the end of the day you still have a pile of shit.
