Yeah, it depends on the temperatures. Very cold air will produce light, fluffy snow that will not compact as much as heavier, wet snow.

Personally, I call in to work, if only to avoid dealing with traffic. Having a 30min commute transform to 4 hours is unbearable.

Then I get to relax, watch movies and play xbox360 all day.

I'm finally starting to hear more specifics. On the drive home I was hearing that it could start late Friday morning and run through Saturday evening. They say we're looking at least a foot. I'm thinking I should build a super awesome snow structure if this storm produces.

then on friday, we'll get about 1-3 additional inches

but i am southeast of the city, so we may get a little more since the storm is passing south

I live in Virginny and just heard we are supposed to get about 20 inches over the weekend.
Already went shopping and stocked up on canned goods and snacks. Made plenty of purified water this evening and put it in bottles, just in case the pipes freeze or crack.
(Which probably isnt a huge issue.)

The mountains outside of LA got 5 feet (yes feet) of snow during the week of storms about 2 weeks ago. THAT was an epic snowfall for SoCal.

Up here? We brush the snow off the car, shovel the mound at the end of the driveway from the plow driving by, and head to work. 12" or more & we'd probably close schools for 1 day. But, by 10 or 11am, pretty much everyone would be out & about. We have a couple of snow days to use & it's been a fairly mild winter, otherwise they'd make the call based on whether or not the plows would get through at least once before the buses went out.

20" of snow in an area that does not experience that amount on a regular basis throughout a typical winter and therefore does not have the equipment, manpower, and practiced experience to deal with it. It is not the same as 20" of snow in Montreal or Detroit where they probably have more snow removal equipment in the city than Virginia has in the entire state.

Totally agree. Detroit is not well prepared to handle lots of snowfall, even though they are two hours due east of me, its all about the lake. 30 miles away or so and and a stiff northwest wind equals snow as long as its below freezing. Last year im quite sure we had over a 100 inches of snow here.

Storm looks bigtime though, no removal equipment and all that snow is going to be a big time problem!

Well, I live in WV as well. If they close the road, I usually get my ATV, hook up the sled, take the kids up on the mountain, build a fire, sled all day and drink beer while laughing at the kids falling in the snow, and getting hit with snow and ice balls. Come home, and depending on if I have electricity, I usually get in the hot tub, or take a shower and pass out.
