here is what they are "predicting" for my area tomorrow morning -

Issued by The National Weather Service
Pittsburgh, PA
3:19 pm EST, Mon., Feb. 8, 2010

... WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TUESDAY TO 7 PM EST WEDNESDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TUESDAY TO 7 PM EST WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY EARLY TUESDAY MORNING. THIS LOW... COMBINED WITH ANOTHER LOW DEVELOPING ACROSS THE SOUTHERN GULF STATES WILL PULL ADDITIONAL MOISTURE INTO THE REGION. THIS SYSTEM WILL ALLOW FOR SNOW... WHICH MAY BE HEAVY AT TIMES... TO PUSH INTO THE AREA STARTING TUESDAY MORNING AND CONTINUE INTO WEDNESDAY. THROUGH WEDNESDAY EVENING... STORM TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 8 TO 14 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED.

AS THE STORM MOVES EAST OF THE AREA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON... BRISK NORTHWESTERLY WINDS WILL BEGIN TO GUST TO 20 TO 30 MPH WITH SNOW SHOWERS CONTINUING. THIS WILL ALLOW FOR BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW TO DEVELOP.

glad i am on vacation this week and do not have to deal with going to work in this

Motherfuckers!!!
I just spent 3 hours digging out the street (not sidewalks, the fucking street) so that me and my dad could leave the house for work tomorrow. The adjacent street is plowed, though it was a private job (we think they paid one of the private plows to take a detour). We actually had to do 2 houses worth, since the house next to us doesn't have a driveway on our road. Well, more like 2.5 since a neighbor ended up coming out to help us, so we started working on his house too. Since we've opened the floodgates more people have come out with shovels...and as we're digging we learn about this 10-20 bullshit. It sounds like they knew all along but initially kept accumulations low to prevent people from panicking more...can't say I blame them.

I came in to start some laundry and help a little with dinner, but now I'm feeling kinda bad for some of the guys who are still out there so i might be dumb enough to venture back out till dinner is served.

I wonder if I could ask for a discount on my gym membership this month. Don't really need it due to all the shoveling, and they've been closed a few days anyways.

Do I even bother trying to go into work tomorrow? It's an hours drive in normal conditions, and considering the snow is supposed to start at noon...I don't think it's worth it anymore.

Damn you!!!

City of Pittsburgh has done a lack laster job of clearing snow from the streets. From the way it sounds the City probably doesn't have the resources / equipment to deal with the volume of snow and crap.

Arrrrrggggghhhhhh!
A plow just came down the street. All that work for nothing. I think I'm going to cry myself to sleep now.

LOL that seems to always happen. A while back when it snowed and I was shoveling the plow guy actually lifted the blade up just enough to prevent snow from going in my driveway, I was quite happy. They normally don't do that but he probably saw me shoveling felt bad especially given it was lunch time and I'd be late for work if I had to also shovel a 2 foot snow bank.

I sometimes just ram into it with the car, but I rather not do that, it can be hard on the rad.

Okay, here's a suggestion. It's so hard to shovel your sidewalks, etc.

Go to the dollar stores. Get a bunch of those cheap 6x8 tarps. You can often find them for about a buck. Cover your sidewalk with them & extend maybe a foot beyond the sidewalk on each side. Overlap them so you're not going to deal with a whole 8 feet at a time. After the 10 inch snowfall, or even during (so long as it isn't windy. If it is, you'll need a little snow started to hold the tarps down) go out with a couple of helpers & just pick up & dump the tarps.

Cover your car with a couple of these tarps Then you can just dump the snow off the car. I have my boat cover on the boat for the winter, but I also have tarps over the boat cover - it's far easier to wipe snow off that tarp than it is to wipe snow off the car.

More expensive than just shoveling, but it works.

Also, if you park on the street in front of the house & don't expect a plow, you can use the tarps under your car's spot so that after the storm passes, a couple minutes work with a couple friends & you have the cleanest spot on the block.

This next one (starting today) will be a blizzard for someone. Likely blizzard conditions on jersey shore and in NYC, possible in DC/Balt, Ocean City, DE. Probably some totals over 2 feet as well in some of those places.

NOVA/DC/Balt is going to be shut down forever after this storm. If you live in the area, get anything you need NOW. Snow to start around early afternoon.

haha, I'm at work now....and I plan to come in every day this week as well. My wife may stay the night at her work (a hospital).

to tell you the truth, this snow really hasn't inconvenienced me much. It forced us to cancel our Superbowl party, and my wife and I are carpooling into work to Baltimore together, due to the bad road conditions. It's kinda of nice actually - we go to starbucks in the morning, and i got into work at 6:30am today

I commuted down to Aberdeen this morning from Wilmington, DE. I plan to leave at noon, not so much for the snow but becuase I have a doctor's appoitment later today.

The shitty part is now that all the snow from last weekend is frozen it is going to be extra hazardous. A foot of snow on solid blocks of ice is not fun. I may be back to work Thursday, but who knows.

It's a matter of perspective. If you live in the city or in areas well plowed/cleared, yeah you think every where is clear and wonder what people's excuses are. Take a look at rural communities. Plows have come out maybe once or not at all - more commonly the latter. Side roads (leading to arterials) were a joke yesterday. I don't see how much they could have done in the last 8 hours.

I tried to get into work yesterday and that was an utter failure. One-lane cleared on what is actually a 3 to 4-lane roads - terrible effort by the county.

Hahaha, NY weatherpeople are being accused of crying wolf, and people are angry as hell over here at them. I really hope that it doesn't snow so these asshole weathermen can look even more stupid.

Is it weird to have an ultra-hatred towards weathermen?

I've kinda learned not to bother parking on side roads (or in my driveway) if we're expecting heavy snow and I have to drive somewhere in the morning... much better to park my car on a main street and walk the 2-3 blocks to my house rather than drive on unplowed side-streets in the am.

The VRE was shut down again today. Not for blockage but lack of customers. 75% of their riders are government employees, who are off today.

were about to get a dumping here as well. Looks to be about an hour away from me. The system might end up covering most of South Western Ontario.

Heavy snowfall warnings are in effect now for counties just south of me. That will probably change as the storm advances.
