What he said...

If you cheat at school you deserve to get kicked out if that's the by-law of the school. Know the rules...don't cheat.

I have never cheated and I often refuse to seek from other students (although some times I do) help on homework because I figure I don't deserve to get a high grade on homework I don't understand how to do and it' s cheap to ask your classmates to bail you out all the time.

Here at Purdue the going rate for CS majors to do other's projects is $150 a project. You have no clue how tempted I have been to take up the offer when really strapped for cash, but as of yet I have not.

I would not turn in a cheater unless it was very serious. Having the solutions would not prompt me to turn students in personally.

I walked up the to professor and pointed him out. The prof didn't think it was a big deal, but I let him know the Chancellor would be hearing about this if not. Kid was tearing up and about to cry, but it was his fault for doing it.

Do what's right. Rat out the rats!!!

That's pretty evil man....seriously. This isn't cheating...it's a few seconds. Anything short of five minutes will make no difference anyway and you just did it for your own power trip. :|

Oh, Please.

I'm, a believer in karma as much as the next one, but you're throwing this cliche phrase around like it's water, and you're also using it in the wrong context.

Cheating is bad, it is like stealing. He did not produce negative karma by turning the offender in to the proper authorities.

Would you be saying the same thing if he turned in a murderer or a rapist? Give me a break. That isn't what karma is all about.

Was this really cheating though. I agree that the line has to be drawn somewhere, but I think it is a little past here.

Taking the answer sheet and passing it around isn't cheating?

Wow.

"I don't tolerate cheating. First offense: zero on the assignment. Second offense: F in the course. No exceptions. Why am I so hard on cheating? Because every cheater devalues my degree and everyone else's degree in this room. How so? A person that cheats his/her way through college is going to graduate knowing less than someone that didn't cheat. When the cheater gets a job, he/she may last a while but will likely get fired after a few months for not knowing how to do the job. The boss then says, 'What school was he/she from? Don't hire anyone else that has a degree from that college.' Hence, all of our degrees just became less valuable. If you find someone cheating, I'm not asking you to turn them in, but I am asking you to refuse to help that person. Helping a cheater hurts the value of your degree."

I wonder how many of you calling this person a rat stopped to think about that? Actually, most of your calling him a rat are probably cheaters.
-DAGTA

My department also takes a pretty harsh stance on cheating for that reason. EE is a relatively rare degrees compared against all awarded BS degrees. So every person who got out with the help of cheating waters down the worth of the degree because;
1) they don't know as much as someone who didn't cheat and less likely to be able to do actual EE work
2) they add more "supply" to hiring and compensation process

This directly hurts the salary/pay and perceived competence of recent grads. The OP did the right thing. Atleast there are some people left in the world who still have principles.

Eli, read the post quoted here. Passions turned in a fellow student who kept writing for a few seconds after time was up on a midterm. Would you call that cheating? I wouldn't even give it a second glance personally.

As for passing the answer sheet around, hell yeah that's cheating! :|

The prof also put a human face on the issus when he had a girl stand up in class and said that this girl would get a B due to the fact the people had performed artifically well on the homework.
So, in essense this person cheating was easily costing you some grades. They deserved it, and I'd have done the same. Sleep well

The way I understand it, it wouldn't have mattered whether or not you ratted anyone out. If your school is like mine, both the person who provided the quiz answers and the people who used it are equally guilty of academic dishonesty and would all at the very least get zeroes for the assignment. I would have just let the professor, dept. chair and dean sort it out with the obvious cheaters.

personally i would never turn somebody in for cheating. im confident in myself and how well i know things and i dont need an A or a B to justify my knowledge. of course if i could redo college i would have worked harder and made sure my gpa was higher than what it turned out to be, but thats a different matter.

I bet the professor recyled his quiz and homework and now is surpired by that people reused the solutions. I had a professor once that was so god damn lazy he was recyling in the next quarter true and false quizes.
