I keep running into this.

I just copied a folder into the shared folder on one computer then tried to copy it over the network to another computer. I got the "access is denied" message. I have done everything I can think of as far as security and sharing is concerned. Full control is on for all users. I can access and copy other folders in the shared folder on the remote computer just fine. why not the one I just copied into the shared folder??

One a related note. Is there any way to turn off local security in it's entirety? All it does is piss me off.

It sounds like you do not have write access to the computer you are trying to copy that folder to. You say that Full Control is on for the Everyone group - do you mean for that folder or for that computer?

If the computer is having difficulty accessing the folder in the network share, then it's most likely related to the permissions on the share. But if a different computer has trouble accessing another, the permissions will lie on the other system, not the folder your trying to copy. Double check the permissions on the system you were trying to copy to.

I'm guessing this is a peer-to-peer network and not a client/server setup. There is no way to completely turn off local security - you can set permissions so low that everyone has access, but unless you're in a closed network, I cant see why you would want to do that.

I have this folder that was located in the root of c drive. I wanted to copy this folder to another computer via the network so i moved it into the shared folder so it would be accessable via the network. i can access all the other folders in the shared folder except the one I copied from the root. This is the only folder I get access denied on. I know that sharing is working because i can copy the other folder without a problem. It seems like, even tho I moved this folder into a shared folder, it continues to be non shared.

btw: I can see the folder across the network but get the access denied message when I click on it.

Thanks

Check the NTFS permissions (not share permissions) on the directory you can't access.

Pardon my ignorance but where are the NTFS permissions?

Thanks

take ownership of the file. thst usually takes care of the access is denied issues.

Just by moving the folder into the shared folder doesn't change the NTFS permissions of that folder. Right click on the folder and select properties from the PC that has the file then change the permissions there.

Like when you copy a file from a CD to the HD it still has read only set.

There will be 'Security' Tab when you view the Properties window for that folder - unless you are running WindowsXP with Simple File Sharing turned on. To turn SFS off, goto Tools - Folder Options - View. Scroll to the bottom of the list and turn off SFS. This will allow you to see the Security Tab and change the folder permissions.
