Accessing Folders Slow down

I am having a problem with my computer. When I go into my folders then subfolders ect my computer slows down and it takes forever for the folders to open. Any ideas what is causing this and how it can be fixed. I am using 256 megs of pc133 ram on a k7t pro2a motherboard, ElsaII video card, 850 tbird.

I am having the exact same problem lately. I only noticed because I finally decided to organize my folders and dump some junk.

P3-700@981
p3v4x
promise raid-mod w/maxtor 7200 drives
win98se
640meg ram @140mhz, no errors 24hrs on docmem test

this is getting tiring. The folders open and close slower and slower until about 5-7sec for open/close and I reboot.
Oh yeah, only background programs are hardware sensors monitor pro and logitech mouse driver for wheelmouse (emexe)


PLEASE HELP, I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO CHECK.

I have an MSI K7T Pro2a motherboard and have experienced the exact same problems described. It's really annoying. Anyways I'm not totally sure what causes it but I don't think it's a hardware issue. I believe it has to do with programs that integrate themselves into the Explore shell. I really don't know how to test this but I've done a few reinstalls of Windows and the problem never seems to occur until various programs are installed. One in particular, SmartFTP appears to be the cause... well at least on my computer. I don't have it installed now and I haven't had the folder stall problem yet. I'm sure there are other programs besides SmartFTP that would cause the same thing.

thanks for the ideas.

this is a fresh, clean install of win98 se.
No junk programs clogging up system and only 2 background programs.

Anyone else have ideas??
