accessing laptop hardisk from desktop??

is there anyway to do that??? perhaps i need to hookup some hardware?? i'm trying to access a stand alone laptop harddisk using my desktop computer but how?? any ideas??

You can get 2.5-3.5" adapters. Your local computer shop should probably have them, for no more than about $10 i should think

Contrary to your opinion, I did read the whole post. Had he not used the terms " standalone laptop " I may have understood his questions. To me, a stand alone laptop is just that, a complete laptop.

Had he used the proper terminology of "access a 2.5" laptop drive from within my desktop I would have fully understood his question and need. kay

ok, so i bought the adapter from compgeeks and here's my question. when i connect the adapter to my laptop HD, there are 4 pins not connected to the adapter. is this how it suppose it is??? i followed the picture shown at compgeeks website. also, to connect the adapter to my desktop, i need a 40 pins IDE cable but the cable i'm using right now, which came together with my mobo, has only 39 pins, one of the pin, the one somewhere in the middle, is factory sealed but this is alright since for that slot, my desktop HD has no pin for it. so how do i connect it to my desktop?? any guide around?? with pictures prefered....

The four pins are to set master or slave, so they don't need to hooked to the adapter.

The cable having only 39 holes is normal for newer cables, especially the 80 pin style. That it so you hook it up the right way, it's an added safe guard if you don't know to put the colored edge of the ide ribbon on the number one pin on the motherboard, or to the power plug in on a drive.

You can try and find a different cable that has all 40 holes available. Or you could cheat it, but this is at your own risk. On older cables, when I was in a pinch, I've taken a pointy knife and gouged out the blocked pin hole.

so how do i set the master/slave on the HD?? i mean which pins represent master/slave??
i also notice that the power cable has only 2 pins. is it allright if i connect it to the usual 4 pins??

Laptop hard drives are designed to use only a +5 volt feed. thus there is no reason to connect the +12 volt rail on the PC to the laptop HDD.

ok, the computer can't seems to detect the laptop drive. i set it as a slave and i connect the 2 pins power cable to the 4 pins cable of my power supply.
