I used Acers for government contracts back in the late 80's. No problems with them then.

A friend recently got an Acer that came with a sound card that was crippled (Mono only). Acer refused to help, stating that they have such configurations. Even though the user manual implies stereo output by showing dual speakers. Acer stated that if the system did not come with speakers, it ships as mono.
"Baloney"

Had to drop a $15 sound card into the system, all is well, but Acer will no longer be recommended based on the customer service.

For those that utilize a mobile machine strictly on AC power, removing the battery would lighten the overall machine weight. Some users find lighter machines to be preferrable. A great deal is personal preference, but could see the advantage of lessening the weight if possible. A battery filler would essentially remove the mass of the battery, and replace the vacant space with a plastic filler of some kind. Implementations vary by manufacturer, both in design and name (believe Sony calls this a "battery saver" for their Vaio line).

As far as signing up for notebookforums.com, cannot see the logic in not doing so. Excellent source of information.

Edit: Adam (the owner of the forum and PCTorque) did quite a bit of testing on hte 1710/12 series not mentioned in that review, as did later owners. Certainly more information there, as well as help in maintaining/optimizing one's machine - if one spends the time to look.

acer is still in business in asia. i'd buy that over some no-name computer. however i'd get buy an IGP nforce2, a barton, an antec case, then grab the rest on sale from various stores. that would be more reliable and fun.

Yep, used to have an acer with windows 3.1. They were accused of selling old/refurbished parts in new PC's, they had some trouble with this a little before '00 i think.

As others have said, Acer survives in Asia. It's a common name in the Taiwan market and probably a known brand in most households.

If you took a brand like Dell to a Taiwanese person (who hasn't spent time in the States), they'd probably be asking, "WTF is a Dell?"

Didn't know Acer was still around. They weren't that bad back in the day (1995-1998).

I remember Acer for their bad reputation from many years ago, but I haven't heard much from them lately.

One of the things about Acer is that they were HUGE and actually made a lot of their own components, like motherboards, optical drives, cases, etc. -- and sold those components under the Aopen label.

The components weren't that bad -- competitively priced.

did you see one of those emachine laptops with the A64 and a 15.4" screen with a radeon 9700? check out one of those and then tell me again if you want a emachine...

also acer makes the ferrari laptop. overall acer is an ok company. i'd buy an acer over a gateway.

I actually had a client call tonight using an Acer... we needed to get in to safe mode so we had her hold the F8 key and the machine powered off and wouldn't turn back on again... she got pissed and hung up so we'll never know if her computer ever started working again.

I'm on my second Acer laptop and I love it. Fast, good build quality, great price. I've had Acer, Dell, and Toshiba laptops. My 1st Acer is still kicking after ~7years, only thing to fail on it was the floppy and that was because of abuse. My Dell Inspiron 5150 needed a performance neutering bios to address heat issues the power adapter died just out of warranty.

Overall, Acer is a great manufacture. Many years ago, it ranked top 5 PC in the world, and it went down very bad. Just last year, they became top 5 again. Acer is not too popular in the US, but it is very popular in Europe. Acer to Europe is like Dell to the US. I just purchased Ferrari 3200, and it was great, but the rpm of the harddrive is disappointed though.. Anyways, it rans fast enough for me. Also, it is very good looking.
