My pick for cheap laptup o' the week.

Circuit City link has an Acer for $499.99 after a $150 CC MIR. 6/11-6/17. $749.99 less $100 instant savings less $150 MIR.

Acer Aspire? Notebook PC (AS3004WLMI)
ACA AS3004WLMI
? Mobile AMD Sempron? 3100+ (1.8GHz)
? 15.4" WXGA display
? 512MB of DDR333 memory
? 60GB hard drive
? Double-layer DVD+/-RW
? Three USB 2.0 ports
built-in wireless

That would be fantastic if the battery was longer.. but overall seems like a great inexpensive laptop for someone who just wants to do stuff online or in Office while they are plugged in.

Cheap laptops keep getting better and better! Usually in the past you would get an ultra slow celeron, 4:3 screen, 256mb ram, 40gb hard drive, possibly a dvd-rom drive/cd-burner and possibly wireless built in.

Just orderd one last week from ZipZoomFly. It was $539 with no tax for me and free shipping. Seems like a good laptop for the price.

Yeah, the Zipzoomfly deal is still alive and just as good with no tax and no rebate.

This notebook does have the SiSM760GX chipset with integrated Mirage2 graphics, which is supposedly inferior to the Intel intergrated graphics.

Still not a bad deal at all. I own a 14.1" model and am very impressed with Acer's build quality.

The ZZF deal is a good one w/o rebates and for those outside CA (no tax). But it doesn't have a DVD burner like the one allisolm posted, for those who care.

The ZZF site (along with Newegg, Tigerdirect, etc) lists the exact same model with a DVD+/-RW, so somebodys specs are skewed - I would bet CC's. I doubt if they are getting a special model with a DVD burner while all the other retailers are not.

Also, is Acer any good?

According to user reviews on the product page on CCs website:

"about 1hr or less"
"Standard battery is weak at only 2000mAh and only lasts about 1hr aftermarket batteries areall 4000mAh."

Actually, ZZF Newegg and TD show the laptop has a DVD/CDRW combo not DVD+/-RW
ZZF

Newegg
TD
The three vendors above all have the same part number AS3004WLCi. The part number on the CC laptop is AS3004WLMi. My guess is the "M" means it has the DVD burner and the "C" is just the DVD reader with CDRW.
Acer's website shows that the Aspire 3000 series has a choice of DVD -Dual double layer drive or DVD/CD-RW combo drive. Acer notebook comparison specs

Anyway there must be the reason that CC's notebook is charging more money up front (750 with 100 instant rebate and 150 MIR) as opposed to the ZZF or Newegg deal thats 200.00 cheaper.

Good point, but the ZZF link does say DVD+/-RW. Look at the second line under "Storage" in the specs.

Integrated variable-speed DVD-Dual drive (DVD+/-RW):
-Read - 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-R, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD-ROM, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 8X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW
-Write - 24X CD-R, 24X CD-RW
It only reads DVD-ROMs and DVD+/-R(W)s.. it does not write them.

Thanks for the clarification.

Like I said, I have an Acer notebook and was pleasantly surprised with the quality. One thing is, the HDD comes formated in Fat32, but I converted to NTFS with no problem.
