In May, the company agreed to a settlement with the FTC amid allegations that World Patent Marketing used unfair tactics, including threats of legal action, when customers complained about the company or its services. The court banned the company from the invention promotion business; in addition, the judge ordered the $26 million judgment to be partially suspended as long as the company's owner Scott Cooper paid about $975,000. Whitaker's involvement was first reported by The Miami New Times.
Whitaker was so involved in the company he sent a threatening email to a disgruntled customer, which was filed in the case by the FTC. In it, Whitaker accuses a customer of "blackmail or extortion" because the customer had threatened to complain to the Better Business Bureau.
"I am a former United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa," the email says. "I am assuming you understand that there could be serious civil and criminal consequences for you" if the customer filed a complaint, Whitaker wrote, adding, "Understand that we take threats like this quite seriously."
He was a member of the board on a suspicious company. Mighty fine person to be running Justice Department.

Even more than this, it looks like Sessions' recusal was a sham. Whitaker met with Trump at least 12 times to discuss the case, and Trump asked sometime in October whether he wanted to be AG, which they surely coincided with the other stuff. Kelly said he was Trump's eyes and ears. I can't imagine Sessions didn't realize what was going on.
He was also Clovis’ campaign chairman and Clovis is a witness in the Mueller probe.It's being reported that Whitaker was advised by Sam Clovis to go on cable news shows if he wanted to get trumps attention. That's exactly what he did, it worked and that he has been in the oval office several times.

Recusal just means Sessions had no authority, not that he wasn't informed, at least to some degree.

This guy has so many conflicts. Meanwhile it’s being reported in the usual bang up White House vetting process they had no idea just how often Whitaker was on record slamming the Mueller probe.
No one can say Trump appoints people who even know what ethics are...let alone have any.
Per the WSJ the FBI is presently investigating this company he used to sit on the board for as a paid member.

It seems clear that the WH doesn't actually vet anybody. Trump just hands out jobs based on his impressions from TV like the old crazy grandpa he is.
They need to look the part too. This guy looks big and tough. That helps a lot with Trump.
