Adding 2nd HD??

When I put the system shown below together, I did not install the Raid drivers that came with MB, as I had not thoughts of putting in another HD. I ran across a really good deal on another Seagate 160 HD just like the one in system, and am considering installing for backup of my C drive as well as C drive on my son's computer networked to mine. Do I need to install the Raid drivers now, do I need Raid for backup or can I just install and use for backup? In my older systems, I just installed and plugged in and everything worked; not sure about this one. Thanks.

If its only a 2nd HDD you don't need RAID. Just put it on the slave connection on either IDE cable. If you want to network it to your son's computer just enable sharing on that drive.

You can add it to your system without RAID as a "backup", but you'll have to manually move files to it that you want to have 2 copies of. The alternative is RAID 1 (mirroring) which will keep an exact copy of your boot drive. I've never done this, so I don't know if you can set up a RAID 1 array with a drive that wasn't originally started with the intent to RAID it (you currect C drive I mean).

It must be a SATA drive if it's just like the other one and won't hook up to an ide channel.

I would just hook it up. Without the raid drivers installed, it should set up as JBOD I think, though I'm not familiar with that mb.

so, 2 HDD that are the same won't work on the same IDE drive unless its a SATA drive?

Oh wait, I read your question wrong... you're trying to do backups of two computers on one drive? I don't think any RAID configuration will help you with that, especially over a network.

Just install it as a regular drive and copy files to it that you can't afford to lose.

Better yet, make some CDs / DVDs of stuff you need to save in case something happens to your comptuer (powersupply kills the whole thing, etc.)
