Hi people....on tuesday, the BT engineer is coming round to fit ADSL. As its still relatively rare here in the UK, im fairly concerned as to what i should expect....especially considering it costs 150 pounds setup and 40 pounds a month.

A) A USB modem is the only option for home ADSL in the UK, I have seen alot of people in the forums with problems regarding the VIA chipset when using USB modems. This is a concern as I use the ASUS A7M266 (AMD North Via South).....

B)There is apparantly a contention ratio of 50-1....50 users max on any one line....this doesnt sound good for my download speeds...

C) Isnt ping usually higher on a USB modem??? Im pretty sure its an alcatel modem...looks like a stingray or somethin

Any info of any sort on ADSL would be really appreciated guys...I cant go on with this 56k.....I need to experience some online Team Fortress and Tribes 2.....

Thanks

1) a7m uses AMD 760. there is no VIA there
2) DSL is not user dependent.
3) i dont think pings are that noticable. an internal one though, would be faster logically.

thanks for the advice, but there is indeed VIA there my friend....the A7M uses the AMD761 chipset and VIA 82C686....

The service is user dependant as I could pay more for a contention ratio of 20 users to one line...however this would cost me loooaadddsss more!

cheers

Thanks mate!

Its the VIA southbridge....to the right of my PCI slots...also controlling USB.

Maybe the whole line sharing thing is different in the US.....

ColdinfinitiE: I think that Bangsalio meant that there isn's a VIA Northbridge, which is usually the main concern. Well personally, though I haven't heard of USB modem issues, but who knows. I think the setup should be fine though.

I've been waiting since I ordered ADSL in June last year, so it's nearly a year. There is this 50:1 user ratio which is not too good at all. However, I don't believe that that many ppl have gone for ADSL. Not as many as I thought anyway so the ratio may well be lower than you think at this time.

Just give it a go. PM 'Snow Patrol', he has it as he is based in London. Perhaps he could give you some feedback.

Perhaps search for his name in the search facility, he's sure to have discussed it here somewhere.

Hmm, the line sharing is probably on the isp's end. My old isp only had a T1 for all its adsl subscribers. You should have a private pipe to the isp, but then you will share your connect out of the isp to the Internet. Odd that they bill it that way though...

The usb port should in theory have enough bandwidth to easily support adsl, however, I just bought a MB with a via KT266 (granted, it has a different south bridge than yours), and my USB mouse stopped responding for a second or 2 every once in a while. Really messed me up in tfc/CS. I never could get it to stop or find anything on the web relating to it. I finally had to switch to ps/2 to get it to work correctly. Obviously it would be just as detrimental if that pause happened on your net connection.

I would think that most DSL modems that have a usb connection would also have a ethernet connection too. Odd they do it that way.
