Adult ADHD

Has anyone been diagnosed with ADD as an adult? My good friend just got diagnosed with it. I didn't believe at first because my thought on add was kids who can't sit still and cause trouble in school.

He started going through the symptoms for adults and we both agreed at the time that we have many of the symptoms. We both just thought the symptoms were normal for tech people and his doctor said ADHD is common in the tech field.

Evidently there is a test(efficacy questionable) to help indicate whether you really display the symptoms. He tested very strong towards the add end of the spectrum. I am now considering a visit as there are things I would like to change but I have always had issues changing these type of habits that are typical of people with adhd..

Anyone been diagnosed as an adult and gotten treatment? Was therapy or meds helpful? I don't take any meds so I am hesitant to start anything that could affect my work performance.

My wife & I have ADD. She's had it since her teens, early 90's, and I was just diagnosed with it about a year ago, I'm in my ealry 30's, but it is a mild ADD compared to my wife's full blown ADD. My doctr gave me a prescription of for a low does of Stratera while my wife has a prescription for Aderal but take a generic form of it. She can't tell on the days I forget to take my pill but I can tell when her's has worn off or didn't take it.

Can't wait to see how our kids will be when we have them.

if you actually do have add, avoid stratera. that shit's horrible. it made me fall asleep in class every single day i took it, i got extremely nauseous and dizzy, and when i drove home, i almost passed out... all from this drug that doesn't help for people with real add.

there are people that actually have it and then there are people with symptoms of it. stratera probably helps people that have symptoms of it, but definitely not those who actually have it.

either way, i've tried everything and the only drug that helped me was concerta... but the effects of it wore off after a couple years. i found vibration therapy and biofeedback therapies to be the best. no side-effects and better results.

I actually started on concetra but had stop taking it after 3 months, I started having a bad reaction to some of its side effects. With the stratera I did have the drowsy feeling, for the first 2-3 hours after taking it, about the first 3 weeks I was on it but that went away & have not had any other side effects since I started taking it about a year ago.

I still do get nauseous & dizzy but only when I forget to eat something before or right after I take it.

I unfortunately have it. It drives me crazy at times. My ability to concentrate is negatively affected. My mind races from subject to subject. I find it hard to finish projects and other things that need to be done. To even sit and read something for more than 10 mins is a struggle for me. To function properly I have to plan things out and follow rigid schedules or nothing gets done. It also tends to make me act a bit silly or flighty. Occasionally it gives me trouble when I try to sleep.

You've been here since 2002 and you don't know that Codewiz is not Iamwiz?
Teeheehee... I had a pitcher of margharitas at dinner.

codewiz = gen hardware and programming helper
iamwiz = regular poster with hot wife
lolawiz = iamwiz wife

I was diagnosed as being ADHD as a child, subsequently put on a whole crapload of meds (not simultaneously; rather I was prescribed just about everything on the market) and nothing worked for me - all of my teachers mentioned that there was no real difference in my behavior whatsoever whether I had or had not taken them for the day. My suspicion (after reading up on all this all these years later) is that I have something else; be it Aspbergers or another autismic relative, since the symptoms are generally the same, but ADHD meds (Ritalin and whatnot) generally are ineffective with those other disorders...

Probably. Never been diagnosed with it, but was talking to someone else who was and takes a light dose of something for it (forget exactly what). He and I have similar symptoms.

It seems to come and go, like I'll be doing really well for a few months, then I have a few weeks that just suck, I don't remember stuff, more easily distracted than normal... But whatever, I try to deal with it as best I can. I hate drugs, don't want to become dependent on anything, and besides, I'd probably forget to take it

LOL @ all the losers in this thread that have a fake disease.

You DONT have ADD. REAL add is extremely rare.

If you can sit though a film, you dont have ADD.

yeah i deal with a lot of this too....i assume adhd, but never have bothered to get checked out. dont care, i (mostly) manage if i stick to doing things in a certain way, and can keep my bb handy to keep up with notes, appointments and tasks.

if a normal part of my schedule regarding a given activity gets interrupted...that activity is fucked.

I sat through an entire film last night, I must not have ADD. Your insight into human psychology, neurology, and behavior is astounding. Do you have a newsletter or a blog?

I think many of you who say you have it expect to have easy, one track lives where everything plays out in front of you in a way that you can always readily handle it.

The reality is, life is generally a jumbled mess of tasks, duties, and responsibilities that you just have to face head on without the marginal benefit of some expensive prescription.
