Advice on Overclocking FSB?

From the OC guide at AnandTech ...

"Buying RAM rated at a Higher Speed
This one's the simplest thing in this entire guide If you want to raise your FSB to, say, 250MHz, just buy RAM that is rated to run at 250MHz, which would be DDR 500."

Well, I have a Barton XP 2600, with a 333MHZ FSB and an MSI KM4AM MB. I bought a gig of PC 3200 RAM. Obviously just sticking in the ram won't raise the speed of my FSB, so what else do I need to do? There are jumpers on the MB. My options are 133, 166 and 200 ... If I put the jumpers at 200, will that bump up the speed of my FSB? What else do I need to adjust if I raise the speed of the FSB to match the speed of my memory. Anything? Please forgive the obvious nature of these questions since I'm totally new to OC.

Yes, the FSB will be running at 200MHz. The CPU however will be running at 2300MHz since the multipier of your CPU defaults to 11.5 (1916.66/166.66=11.5). You will then have a PC:

- that doesn't boot
- boots, beeps and stops
- boots but resets during Windows startup
- boots and runs stable for half an hour
- runs stable

If it runs stable for only half an hour or resets during Windows startup, an increase of the core's voltage might help. But you are on the road to damaging your hardware ...

Well Sven, your first guess was right - it didn't boot. I mean it started to, but then I got the blue screen of death with an error message. And I did notice that the BIOS was now reporting my PC as a 2300 instead of 2600. Fortunately I just reset the jumper and all was fine. You don't think I could have done any hardware damage with that one attempt, do you? BIOS reported the CPU tem as 41c, a little colder than it usually runs ...

No, it's highly unlikely unless you raised the voltage (vcore) to your cpu.

Check your memory too, can it handle higher than 333 Freq?
Had a problem with KingMax DDR333 on an ABIT VA10 board with AMD barton 2500+ (1.8GHz), changed to DDR400 KingMax, just up'd the FSB and now running at 2.1GHz. 2degree temp increase, but I am also using CPU-Idle siftware to cool down the box.

CPU could go faster, need a mobo like yours - 400FSB

Thanks Fern - that's good to know.

WolveBane - it's 3200, so rated for a 400FSB - whether it can go faster, I don't know.

I decided to take the coward's way out - I'm going to swap my CPU/MB toward the cost of an Athlon 64 3000 and a cheap but compatible MB ...

thanks for all the advice, everyone!

Hmm.. You missed my point ...
>>Check your memory<<
try Corsair XMS4400 or OCZ PC4400 memory, cos sometimes the memory prevents you from OC'ing...
But VCore, DDRV & CPU ratio has to be done correctly for extream OC'ing as well...
..............................
PS: ABIT's AV8 is a good MoBo ... 2GHz FSB & it contains OCGuru so you can OC easier if you want to.

learn how to read... he said he had DDR400

anyway do this:

set cpu vcore to 1.8V (trust me)
set vdimm to 2.6 or 2.7 (just in case)

and let er rip

who knows maybe you have a good core

if it doesnt make the jump stabely then i would just scrap it and go with plan B like you said in the other thread
