Hi Frenz,

Just joined the group. Have been refereing to anand tech forums for quite a long. I needed a laptop.
Following is what i could list as what i require:-
1) Absolutely Light.
2) I would nt be investing soon so i would prefer it to be the most latest.
It would be an absolute non gaming device.
Open to Apple as well.
I found these two:-
Any better options.

Do you need a quadcore for rendering/encoding or a dualcore for effeciency? 13" screen I take it? What are you looking for in build quality? Price range?

The Sony Vaio S is pretty good for around $999

I would recommend the Lenovo X220. The X220 is a refresh of the highly-rated X201 with the new second-gen Sandy Bridge processor:

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/products/p...220/index.html

The X220 is extremely lightweight, has the same great build quality that Lenovo is known for. The X220 is designed with road-warriors and business users in mind: you get a durable rubberized housing and steel hinges. No flimsy "chiclet" keyboard here, you get the same comfortable keyboard that all Thinkpads are famous for. Add a high-res screen and a second-gen Core i7 processor and you get a mean machine in a very tiny package.

I've sold several of the X201's and people have been extremely satisfied with them.

"...the longest lasting and fastest ultraportable we've ever tested ... requires no performance, durability, or endurance sacrifices, and that's not something we can say very often when it comes to the many ultraportables out there. Sure, there are flashier looking options out there ... but hey, good luck getting those to run for 15 hours on a single charge..."
Good luck!

I guess it's hard to recommend without knowing *what you're going to do with it*

Would a netbook suffice? How 'bout one of those fancy new tablets? Slate device? full-blown laptop can do a lot, but what do you need it to do?

I am also looking at the Toshiba R835-P56x (at $859 Amazon) for an everyday laptop (word, photoshop, internet browsing, movies, occasional video editing/rendering) ... maybe the occasional gaming but nothing more than stuff like bejeweled, some RPG. Most important is the weight - this seems to be the lightest laptop (at 3.2lbs) with an optical drive and reasonably powerful (i5-2410) CPU. Given the power these new Sandybridge CPU's have, I was hoping to also get rid of my ~6 year old desktop.

The reviews on the net for this laptop are very superficial ... they mostly talk about batter life (which is 8 hrs and that's fabulous) but nothing on tests with everyday usage. I pored over the search results on AnandTech for i5-2410m review and came up with articles referring to the CPU and HD 3000 graphics but it wasn't actually tested - other processors in the family were tested. If the Toshiba machine had an i7, I may have bought it right away. Or if the price was a $100 less ...

I also looked at X220 - a similar config costs around $1100. Doesn't make sense to pay that much...

Any advice would help.

Cheers
Nomad.

There are toshiba R830 models with i7 cpus. You might need to go to toshiba's web site though, and they cost more of course.
